The Elegant Updo, a Classic Wedding Hairstyle

Christine Bude Nyholm
The 2010 runway trend for bridal hairdos is the classic updo. The elegant style, swept off of the face and neck is reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn in the movie Breakfast at Tiffanys. The classic style is a choice that will hold up well on the wedding day and photographs well for wedding pictures.

The updo is an elegant fashion, with the hair swept off the face and shoulders for a clean, neat look. The updo can be swept into a classic French Twist, chignon or bun. The updo can complement any wedding dress, but works especially well with a dress with a high neck and puffy sleeves. The updo may look stark paired with a dress with bare shoulders, who a few loose tendrils soften the look.

In order to style hair into an updo, it should be at least shoulder length. Many prospective brides use the months prior to the wedding day to grow out their hair so it will be long enough to pull up.

The wedding gown, wedding veil or headpiece and the hairstyle should all be coordinated, so they are in proportion and work together. Professional advice can help to achieve the coordinated look, so seek the advice abut the hairstyle from the bridal consultant at the bridal salon and from an experienced hair stylist.

Once you have the veil, or headpiece, make an appointment with the hair stylist so you can consult about the hairstyle and have the stylist fashion your hair in the proposed style to make sure it looks great with the veil.

Keep in mind that you should not make any drastic changes in the weeks before the wedding. Drastic changes, such as coloring and perming, may go wrong and require correction. You do not want to deal with making last minute corrections.

For an event as important as a wedding, it is best to have a professional stylist fashion your hair. The stylist can make sure that the hair is fashioned and securely held in place with combs, pins and hairsprays.

If you want to experiment with styling the hair yourself you can brush the hair out by bending down at the waist and brushing the hair downward. Put styling mousse into the hair near the crown. Throw your head back and gather the hair into a ponytail that can be fashioned into a bun at the top of the head or into a chignon near the neck. For added height, you can lightly backcomb the hair before gathering the hair.

Secure the hair with a covered elastic band, pins and combs. Once the hair is styled, spray with hairspray to hold the hair in place.

An elegant updo is a hairstyle that is a classic wedding look that complements most wedding fashions.
