The End of an Era: Brian Dawkins and Eagles Part Ways After 13 Seasons
Brian Dawkins is Headed to the Denver Broncos for 2009
Many expected Dawkins to return for a 14th season in Philadelphia with a restructured One-Year contract, but those feelings were laid to rest when Dawkins was announced as the newest member of the Denver Broncos on February 28th. He will become the new leader of the Bronco's defense, who ranked 26th in the NFL in Passing Yards Allowed (228.5 per contest). Known as one of the most versatile players in the league, Dawkins adds an previously absent dimension to this Broncos' unit, as he recorded 3 sacks, 6 Forced Fumbles, and 1 Interception last season for Philadelphia
For 2009, it appears that the Philadelphia Eagles will rely on Quintin Mikell and Quintin Demps for Safety duties. This will be the first time in 13 seasons that the Eagles will have a Dawkins-less defensive backfield.
This is not the first time that Philadelphia has failed to re-negotiate with a player reaching the twilight of their career, just last Fall Linebacker Jeremiah Trotter was released from the Eagles for similar reasons.
Dawkins will certainly remain a staple in Philadelphia sports lore for decades to come. Whether it is the fond memories of Dawkins flapping his arms as if they were wings, or his bone crushing hits, he is truly one of the greatest players to have ever worn a Philadelphia Eagles' uniform.
