The End of the World

Predictions and Predictors of the End of Days

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

Soothsayers and oracles,
Psychics and the
Psychiatrically impaired
Blessed or cursed
With the powers of foreknowing
Claim to see days and events
That have not yet come to pass.
To challenge one
Who believes that their knowing
Is guided by a higher power,
To suggest charlatanism
Would seem rather crass.
For those who insist they know
Tomorrow today,
Events never take them aback
And they could, if they chose,
Get rich quickly at the track.

Some see the end of days
In their dreams and waking visions
And hear the stern warnings in
Voices unheard by
The person resting beside them.
The apocalypse looms
And the end is nigh,
Make ready the tombs
And don't waste time asking why.
Predictors are a lot
Like boa constrictors;
Squeezing hope and life
From those they can
Wrap themselves around
Until the singing voices of life
Are replaced with the woeful sound
Of final resignation
And inevitable death
As yet another new date is
Predicted
For humankind's last breath.

Those short of healthy ego
Or devoted to preached dogma
May be scared and shaken,
But all predictions
To the contrary,
Tomorrow, with most other people,
They, too,
Will again awaken.

Very well done, David. I take the Bible as my source for when the world will end. Both the Old and New Testaments speak of it, but leave the day and the hour in the hands of God. I trust in God's word, so I don't need a date fixed by someone who "claims to know..."

    A very nice article.

Great point David. I wanted to make sure and comment on this before time ran out! LOL. Seriously, the article "Mental Illness Is Not a Second Class Problem" was so true. This free-market idea of health coverage leaves dangerous gaps for those who, through no fault of their own, have mental illness. Great social commentary and points in that my friend.

Really liked this poem. It's thoughtful. Heck even if you are religious, you realize the Bible says no one knows the day or hour but the father. Stop throwing out dates. Be a good person because it is the right thing to do, not because of an end date.
