The Essentials of Security Video Equipment

Writing Mama

Security video equipment is an essential purchase for many industries. Banks, stores, restaurants and storage facilities all utilize surveillance technology to keep their businesses safe and, hopefully, crime free. Homeowners can also benefit from the use of security video equipment to protect their property and their loved ones. Many home security companies have developed over the course of the last two decades to meet the growing need of private citizens to have surveillance in and around their home.

Security Video Equipment Protects People

In general, security video equipment is used for the security and protection of the citizens using a public place or while occupying their home. The equipments' basic function is to monitor the behavior of people and look for activities that are outside of the desired norms.

For example, security professionals at a crowded public venue like a shopping mall expect patrons there to act in a certain manner. They use security video equipment to keep their eye on the patterns of the crowd, and they respond to any behavior that deviates from the norm. This can include individuals running through the mall, altercations on the premises or activity that would indicate theft.

Security video equipment was originally designed to stop the theft of property from stores and industrial warehouses. However, as our society seeks higher levels of security, the technology is being used in many different ways. Airport terminals have been especially reliant on video surveillance equipment after the terrorist attacks. Parking garages are another popular place for video security. Certain businesses that require high levels of trust in their employees (such as banks and casinos) utilize video technology to prevent employee fraud and theft.

Security Video Equipment Prevents Crime

Even the presence of security video equipment in a store, a workplace or outside the home has proven to be a crime deterrent. In fact, many home security companies leave small signs in the yards of their customers for two purposes. The signs serve as advertisement for the home security company, and they also notify others that any crime committed on the property will be recorded. The video equipment (or a sign notifying there is video surveillance) seems to be a visual cue to potential criminals to stop and think before they commit the act. If they proceed, the run the risk of being seen, recognized and charged.

Evidence collected from security video equipment has been used in successfully prosecuting criminals who foolishly broke the law in front of a camera. Video surveillance is an integral part of law enforcement because it can help bring wrongdoers to justice. Witnesses can lie on the stand, but a piece of evidence collected through video surveillance will always tell the truth.

Security Video Equipment Options

For private citizens, there are two basic choices for security video equipment. CCTV systems (closed circuit televisions) operate with a system of camcorders and viewing screens. The area being surveyed is either monitored by a security professional on the premises, or recorded for later viewing. Digital security video systems can be controlled from a remote location. This allows offsite security companies to focus in on specific targets for better monitoring.

Although security video equipment does cost more than a standard alarm system for businesses and homeowners, the extra expense is worth it. Video surveillance provides a peace of mind that a simple alarm system cannot. The costs are minimal when compared to the thousands of dollars of stock or personal property that can be lost in a burglary.

Security Cameras especially the digital kind are great. A car was recently broken into at my apt complex. And they found who did it within the week. It definitely helps!
