Domestic violence is not just men hitting woman or women hitting men. There is physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, economic abuse and Psychological Abuse. While we might like to think that one form of abuse has a "smaller" impact that the others, all forms of domestic violence
can have detrimental effect. The effect is far reaching, it affects the persons immediately involved, the extended family, friends, co-workers, other witnesses, and the community at large.
The statistics for domestic violence represents in my opinion a small fraction of the real number of cases that go unreported. Many persons through fear, guilt, shame, destroyed self esteem , never report that they are victims of domestic abuse. In fact to some it might just be a way of life, when it gets to that stage especially with children around is when the major damage occurs, as it creates a "cycle." The children, both male and female, will no doubt either be victims themselves or live in an environment where abuse is prevalent, mainly because that is what they have been exposed to as a general way of life.
But how is it in this day and age with all the support groups, they have government agencies, support groups, counseling, hot lines, support groups that are supposed to be easily reachable, domestic violence is so prevalent? Why is it that is domestic violence is still disrupting our society. Is the pattern that embedded within our mentality that we cannot break free of it? Is the information not being given to those who need it the most? How are we still failing those people that are in desperate need of help when we are trying to hard to rid ourselves of this destructive force.
Is the general public aware of the signs of abuse that goes on around them? Do we care enough about our co-worker, friend, associates, family member that we can detect when something is not correct within their homes? Are we too busy and consumed with our own lives that obvious signs go unnoticed? It is time that we revisit the programs that are in place to increase public awareness and to help people who are not the primary victims, to help the victims, to see help and stop the pattern of domestic violence.
There are huge efforts to combat, the aid virus, cancer, hunger, poverty, which are fantastic and will do great for the whole we live in, but i think it is time to put some more effort into the domestic violence side of the dark forest. Domestic violence, kills, it destroy, it pollutes, it affect the family, the workplace, the society, and the country as a whole. The effects are far reaching, resources are required to help a victim of domestic violence and the "Abuser".
If everyone takes time out just to educate themselves about the signs of domestic violence and pay attention to those around them, i am sure we can help someone and more importantly, make a telling difference and do our society a good service in helping to reduce domestic violence.
