The Evolution of Politics Through Twitter

Celeste St. John
Before Twitter was born, current events depended on the front page of the newspaper to spread information around. The six o'clock news encouraged local digests and national exploits to be reported.

Within this decade, as the Internet has grown and gotten more personal, Twitter has turned every person on the street corner with a smart phone into his or her own editor with a one line editorial column to report the daily grind.

People hear reports on the marquis-infested cable news channels and report their own opinions and findings to each other. The broadening and exchange of ideas has unified political parties, changed the consensus of current events vantage point.

For example, celebrities who tweet come in contact with non-celebrities who tweet and exchange ideas. Since everyone hears the same news story because of modern television technology and the advance of the Internet, class status playing field is leveled in cyberspace. In addition, celebrities have become more and more interested in charities and political causes of choice as it is sometimes more fashionable, but most likely a better way to spend your time, rather than just make movies, music and take pictures for the invasive paparazzi.

Politics is also not as one-sided because of Twitter. New positions and strongly-held beliefs have surfaced because of Twitter feedback and affiliation. Twitter has not made the town hall meeting obsolete, but it has increased the meeting times, areas and frequencies of their meetings and given town hall meetings a new home.
