The Evolution of Work at Home Jobs

'The number one benefit of Information Technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn't think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential.' Steve Ballmer

As technology continues to evolve, work-at-home jobs (WAHJs) will appeal to more than just stay-at-home parents and seniors. Everywhere, middle class Americans are struggling with commuting to and from work. It is no wonder that many states are considering transforming from a five day work week to a four day work week. This economic initiative alone is a huge indicator of what's to come for middle-class Americans.

Although many companies are already currently involved in offering virtual jobs, there is still a host of opportunities available for many others out there. Currently, many companies hire a small percentage of virtual workers to help with their customer service issues. What does the future hold for this industry?

Imagine for one moment a perfect virtual world. Employees will no longer have to worry about their daily commute; instead they can focus their time on completing all assignments due. Corporate directors can rest assured that there will be no religious or sexual harassment issues in the workplace; they can also monitor and give direct feedback on performance. Virtual meetings where everyone can network and share ideas. Not to mention the savings in building and equipment maintenance. These are ideas that are already being put into play. The question is, "Have they reached their maximum potential?"

As companies such as Apple, Carnival Cruise Lines, 1800 Flowers, T-Mobile, AT&T pave the way we are sure to see a burst of development in the WAHJs. There are already websites dedicated to helping people learn about WAHJs.There are fora filled with thousands of users who exchange ideas on anything from taxes to toddlers.

There are a myriad of positions available for someone seeking out this type of opportunity. Among them are meeting planners, customer service representatives, administrative assistants, E-bay sellers, and even court reporters. We can expect to see millions of people logging in, instead of clocking in. Taking a thirty minute break for lunch will turn into running to your refrigerator to grab a turkey sandwich.

The middle of our year is fast approaching. Politicians are promising change. We can all see that it will take more than a few years to get our economy back on track. I truly believe that next year will bring work at home jobs to the forefront. Online consumers should be aware of sites that require a start up fee. This can be a scam. There should be no fees required to become an employee. WAHJs should be considered seriously before making any career moves. Of course, they are not for everyone. However, the virtual world is always changing, and with its changes we are likely to see the online doors open up for all Americans.

A few words from a Ticket to Work Program Participant ...

I have been disabled for over 9 years now. It was hard to live with the fact that I would not go work again. I had a lot of questions. Would my disability payment each month be enough to survive on? Will I ever be productive again? All these things ran through my mind until I was introduced to the Social Security Administration's, Ticket to Work Program.

The Ticket to Work Program is an employment program for people with disabilities who are interested in going to work. The Program is part of The Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999 - which Legislators designed to remove many of the barriers that previously influenced people's decisions about going to work because of the concerns over losing health care coverage. The goal of the Ticket to Work Program is to increase opportunities and choices for Social Security disability beneficiaries to obtain employment at companies like J. Lodge, vocational rehabilitation (VR),

Nice read, T.C. (^;^) I can definitely see more work at home jobs in the future with the state of the current economy. Too bad so many WAHJs broadcasted on-line are just scams trying to get people to part with their hard earned money. Any site that wants an up-front fee is best avoided.

Great write-up, but it is important to emphasize that there are a lot of scam artists out there taking advantage of people who need stay at home jobs (I like your SAHJ acronym).

I think these are ideal for entrepreneurs and those experienced in freelancing or being independent workers. The jobs ARE there but workers (as always, even in conventional jobs) need to find the work, sell themselves, etc. Yes, I think this is a booming area, especially with gas prices being prohibitive! Super topic.

They are not easy to find however. There are lot of bogus jobs and jobs that are not jobs at all but business opportunities. If you run into any sites that ask for money run away cause they will rip you off.

Truthfully work at home jobs are some of the best jobs to have, not only can you do office and data entry work but it's possible to run and manage a whole business from home. Great write up!
