The Evolving Plots of Ugly Betty on ABC

Alison Hasselquist
Ugly Betty has made a sweep across the nation with plots starting to evolve. Ugly Betty is first seen as the typical girl from Queens, who also happens to be Latino. We fall in love with Betty from the start, because we can see ourselves through her world. The casual awkwardness to the inevitable romance between Betty and Henry, (the two so-called "nerds" of Mode Central).

In the first season she enters confidently and fails miserably at her first meeting at mode, when she comes in dressed in her Guadalajara wrap; which she is considering to be most fashionable. On top of that, her entrance into the meeting is not all together graceful, in which she bumps into the plasticized evil door.
Poor, poor Betty! Not only does she begin with a rough start at Mode, she learns from her friend Christina that Bradford Meade only hired her because she was the only girl he could think of that would not sleep with. In fact, Bradford found her to be rather ugly.

As Betty continues into the "Mode" feeling, Daniel begins seeing her as who she really is. He was making it totally impossible for her, at the beginning because he wanted to be rid of her. However, he learns everyday that she is exactly the person he needs to keep him on track.

Conflicts arise in both families, bringing it into conclusion that not all well to do families have it all together, but that they are like regular people, too, with thoughts and feelings about others around them. Plus, they have their own problems.

Alex, the older brother of Daniel presumed to be dead, has now turned into a female, and wants to overturn Mode and get back at his/her father with the help of Wilhelmina. Bradford is put in jail whom the now called Alexis is claiming that her father killed Faye Summers. Later we learn that it was actually the mother, Claire Meade. While Wilhelmina is loosing her touch with Alexis, she moves in to form a bond with Bradford. Bradford gets sucked into Wilhelmina's world and they become engaged. As Claire tries to stop the wedding, the plot thickens within the Meade family.

Betty's problems arise with her father's visa to America. The go through house arrest and finally have to go to Mexico to solve the problem. That doesn't work, so he has to stay. Meanwhile, Hilda is still preparing to marry Santos, the father of their son Justin. As they are finally starting to work together, Santos is shot and killed, leaving us in season one.

Many questions were left unanswered during season one, and they continue to not answer questions until the next episodes. At the end of season one, the main question we wanted to know was:

"Is Santos really dead?" Other questions filled our heads as we wondered about Ignacio Suarez and about him getting home.

From watching it looks like Santos really was killed, and from interviews about upcoming shows Hilda will start dating again. It seems that they went through the Santos thing a little bit fast, but I guess in a show they can't show everything. But who will she start dating? The guy she met in Mexico, or Daniel from Mode? In one instantaneous scene, when Daniel and Hilda were dealing with hard issues, they kissed! But do they actually get together? Or, how about Betty and Daniel? This doesn't seem highly likely, as she is getting more and more involved with the accountant Henry. Betty and Daniel have always been there for each other, true, but it may be viewed as only a mere friendship. We have a great many more questions that are soon to played out in this twisted ABC drama/comedy.
