The Exorcism of Emily Rose: The Story Behind the Movie

The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel

Kristin Brooks
"The Exorcism of Emily Rose" has a true background. It is a story based on the life of Anneliese Michel.
Born September 21st 1952, Anneliese lived a normal life until she began shaking and lost control of her body one random day in 1968. She was diagnosed with "Grand Mal" epilepsy by a neurologist at Psychiatric Clinic Wurzburg, where she was admitted for treatment.

Soon after she began seeing develish grimaces during her daily prayers. These appearances seemed to have no other explanation to her, than she was possessed. She was also hearing voices give her orders and telling her she was going to hell.

Her parents beagan to request exorcisms from different pastors in 1973, only to be rejected because she didn't meet the definition of an Infestatio (possession). Without meeting all the criteria, which included an aversion to religious objects, speaking in tongues, and powers of the supernatural, a Bishop could not approve an act of exorcism.

A year later, Pastor Ernst Alt supervised Anneliese over a period of time and requested permission from the Bishop of Wurzburg to perform the exorcism. After being rejected, her condition worsened with more erratic behavior. This included attacking family members, starving herself, drinking urine, destroying religious objects, and self-mutilation.

Finally in September 1975, the Bishop of Wurzburg assigned Father Arnold Renz and Pastor Ernst Alt to perofrm an exorcism on Anneliese. The goal was to rid her of several demons (Lucifer, Nero, Cain, Hitler, and Judas Iscariot, to name a few and damned souls that had manifested through her. From this time until July of 1976 one to two sessions were held every week.

She was able to live a somewhat normal life during this time. However, the attacks didn't disappear. Over 40 audio tapes record and preserve the details of the process she went through.

The last session was on June 30, 1976. Suffering from pneumonia, her parents had to help her through the motions. She told her mother during the process "Mother, I'm afraid." The following day she died.

With the 1974 film "The Exorcist" coming to cinemas during this time, controversy developed about whether Anneliese's was a case of obsessive ideas or a real possession. After more than 2 years her case was took to court and her parents along with the 2 exorcists were found guilty of manslaughter resulting from negligence and omitting first aid. They were sentenced to 6 months in jail and probation.

A commission of the German Bishop-Conference declared that she had not been possessed, but their were so many believers in her possession that her body was exhumed 11 1/2 years after she was buried. Everything was as to be expected after a normal death and burial.

Anneliese Michel's grave is now a place of pilgrimage for rosary-praying.

The only way this girl could of been possessed is she was not saved by Jesus. Even satan believes Jesus is the Christ. You cannot be saved by your own works, only through accepting that Jesus died in our place. Christians cannot be possessed by demons, but can be oppressed. One of satans greatest deceptions is he wants people to believe that he does not exist, there are many references to satan and demons in the Bible. Study The Bible.

I Had no idea this was a real story... Until I saw the movie about emily rose... when I was younger I saw one about a little girl.. The only parts I remember is there was a family gathering and she was in the middle of the entrance and she pissed on the floor..and there was another one with her doing the spider walk down the stairs. Look on youtube and type "spider walk"
It was the creepiest thing I have ever saw. and I was young..

I am writing a paper for school on this..
changing up the names and stuff. but now that it is real I am terrified to use the word "demon" and "devil" and anything bad.
SCARED.... but I am so ganna get an "a"

I find this dicussion a bit disturbing simply on the basis that we are no further forward in our thinking as say the middle ages. Possession does exist but it isnt the case that it was demons who were Hitler,Cain etc.. it is the amalgamation of various thought processes and extermal influences . Eg; the external influences being religion and belief. There is a high propensity to believe in Demons and ghosts etc.. due to our religious indoctrination or conditioning. Ofcourse the posession existed as can be seen from accounts and audio tapes etc.. but the interpretation is not so dualistic as we believe. Hitler is dead but his thoughts and anger is shared and carried forward in all of us .Emily Rose was very sensitive to all that was in her knowledge from schooling etc..some of us arent this way inclined. Even with Emily it was all about suggestion even the priests participated in reinforcing this. Hitler is dead but he carries on through our thought processes. It is scary but not when y

who cares if she was possessed or not. something happened to her that caused her to die. no one should have been punished for her death. why should a priest go to jail for trying to help her. just because all things can't be explained by man doesnt mean that its not true. That's what i got from the movie.
