The Expendables (2010)

Choose Your Weapon

Although The Expendables has been publicly criticized Stallone said it himself with the movie being a box office success the critics can say whatever they want because it's what the fans think that's important and he's right. The Expendables is probably one of the most ambitious action movies of all time starring most of the action heroes of the last 20 years and a few new up and comers. I've never seen a movie with so many big names in the cast list and although Bruce Willis and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger only have cameos they are still a part of the movie. Aside from the cast the plot is pretty much a paint by numbers for an action movie. There's no real originality to it and you won't hear me say this very often but really with this movie the plot doesn't really matter. Where The Expendables truly shines is the character interaction. Like I said before if you like action movies then one of these guys has probably been one of your favorite action stars and to be able to watch them interact with other is a fan boy's dream come true.

Although the plot involves five mercenaries Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham have the two biggest roles in the movie which is okay but I would have liked to have seen more from Randy Coutures character but that could be just because I'm a huge mixed martial arts fan. The few scenes he does have in the movie are very funny and entertaining. With the cast list that The Expendables has it's hard to complain but I will say this it would've been cool if they could have found parts for Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Stephen Segal as well.

I've probably seen every action movie that all the stars have been in and probably another 2 million action movies that starred nobodies. So I would say that would make me a pretty good judge over the action scenes in this movie and I've got to say Stallone and the ensemble cast outdid themselves. There were some of the greatest action and fight scenes I've ever seen. Where else will you be able to see Jet Li in outstanding flights against Dolph Lundgren or Sylvester Stallone fighting Steve Austin not to mention my favorite which was Steve Austin fighting Randy Couture. As much as I love the action in this movie there were a few scenes and not many but a few that you can tell CGI was obviously used and if you have read any of my other reviews you'll know CGI is a pet peeve of mine. That being said this movie is so awesome I have to let go. I give The Expendables 4.5/5 stars.
