The Experience of Windsor Town Centre

Shaheen Darr
The town of Windsor in Berkshire, exhibits an interesting blend of modern life that co exists with its historical past, a past that continues to play a part in the town's activities to this day. Views of Windsor Castle can be seen from most parts of the town centre with the Royal Standard flying over the Round Tower of Windsor when the queen is in residence. There is always an opportunity to see the Changing of the Guard when the queen's guards change duty and march from the High Street into the Castle accompanied by the Guards band.

Streams of tourists flow in and out of the castle especially during the summer months and there is easy access to all the shopping areas of Windsor from the Castle. Watching the shopping activities from the Castle entrance stands the majestic bronze statue of Queen Victoria, built in 1887 by Sir Edgar Boehm for the queen's Golden Jubilee.

Opposite the Castle is the famous Peascod Street, with a wide variety of stores catering to every shopper's need. Daniels department store is one of the oldest stores in Windsor and stocks fashion clothing, bags, shoes and jewellery and toys. Another famous shopping area is the King Edwards shopping centre, which has been extended to include many more shopping outlets and has the convenience of having its own multi level parking area.

The large number of souvenir, china and gift shops that line the High street of Windsor reflect the importance of the tourist trade to the town. From the Windsor Royal Station, you can enjoy a cup of coffee while watching the hustle and bustle of tourists enjoying the town and at the left of the station is the Windsor and Eton Riverside station from where you can travel to all parts of Britain.

Theatre lovers can visit the Theatre Royal, directly opposite the castle where new theatre productions can be watched before they reach London's West End. At the newly opened Firestation Centre for Arts and Culture, you can watch movies and theatre, listen to live music and participate in exhibitions and workshops

It is easy to explore inside the Castle grounds after shopping as it is so close to the shopping centre. The Great Park is walking distance from the Windsor town centre and here you will be enthralled by stunning views of forest trees and woodland under the watchful eyes of the deer amongst the trees. The River Thames is also close to the town centre and during the summer months people enjoy taking a walk along its bank or watch the ducks and swans swimming by. Some take boat trips to London to enjoy scenic views of the different areas of Britain the river winds through.

Windsor provide a shopping experience that is truly unique and is a place that has to be visited a number of times to enjoy all its delights.

I have never been. It is strange for me to think of kings and queens except in fairy tales. Good writing.
