The Eyes Have it: Skin Care and Makeup for Your Eyes

Yvonne M. Glasgow, Ph.D.
Your eyes are one of the most sensitive areas on your face. They have a thin skin below them that can easily get damaged. The eyes are the first thing a lot of people notice about someone else when they first meet. You are taught to look someone in the eyes when you talk to them. Your eyes are what you see the world with. For all of these reasons, and more, it is very important to take good care of your eyes.

Eye Area Skin Care

The eyes are considered the window to the soul, so take care of them. It is important to buy special products for your eye care. Why? Because the skin around your eyes isn't the same as the rest of your facial skin. It's thinner, more tender and delicate. I suggest getting an eye makeup remover, an eye area moisturizer and a nighttime moisturizer for your eyes. Eye makeup removers help remove water-proof mascaras and eye liners that may be harder to remove with regular cleansers. Choose your moisturizer and night cream by your skin type. They even make wonderful products for aging skin that can help defeat wrinkles and fight off age spots. Wash your face and eyes in the morning before applying makeup and again at night before bed. Never go to bed with makeup on, this can clog your pores and cause breakouts.

Eye Makeup Products and Tips

Part of your skin care routine for your eyes probably includes your makeup routine. The basic ingredients of well made up eyes are eyeshadow, mascara, and eye liner. Extras you may want include are eyelash curlers, fake eyelashes, concealer, eyebrow pencil and glitter. Mine usually includes all but the eyebrow pencil, fake eyelashes and eyelash curlers. And I only use glitter when I am going out! I also sometimes use a white eyeliner to add some brightness to the inside and outside points of my eyes. This helps brighten your eyes and make you look more awake.

So, for your eyes, you want to start with your concealer, if you have dark circles. Some people naturally have dark circles, some people only have them when they are burning the midnight oil. Before applying your powder, but after your foundation, apply your eyeliner. When you apply your eyeliner before your powder the powder will help your eyeliner stay in place. It will be less likely to crease or smear. Next apply your eyeshadow. You can do this however you want. There are many ways to apply eyeliner, depending on what kind of look you are going for. I kind of like a smoky, smoldering look. I use a small amount of black eyeshadow under my eyes and across the very top of my top lashes. Then I use my choice of lighter color to cover my lid halfway up to my eyebrows. I usually use a medium brown. Apply mascara last, and let the top lids dry before applying to your bottom lids, and then don't blink until it's dry or you'll smear!

For a night out you can add some glitter. Add it to the inside and outside crease, like the brightener. Or add it to your top lid, under eye or even across your brows. If you have thinning brows use a brow pencil. If you have wimpy eyelashes you can use false lashes. If you have ample lashes you can control them with a lash curler.

Have fun with your eyes, but take care of them. Pick colors you like, that go with your skin. Pick colors that bring out your natural eye color. Always keep your skin clean to keep it healthy. Protect your eyes with special skin care products made just for them.

Good tips, I always put my eyeliner on first...now I know different. And I just recently purchased some of the glitter mascara also to wear out in the evenings (which is rare, but still...always want to look nice)!
