What is Adrenal Fatigue?
When your adrenal glands are not functioning at their peak performance it is known as "adrenal fatigue". Many people tend to experience a multitude of symptoms associated with this condition when they are stressed out for long periods of time whether physically or emotionally. Either way, the body can't take constant undue stress. Stress itself isn't bad, and there is some good stress, but you don't work through that stress or do things that can minimize your level of stress it can take its toll on the body resulting in more harsh conditions.
Dr. James Wilson is the doctor responsible for coining the term "adrenal fatigue". Dr. Wilson believes that this condition is misunderstood in the medical community, and many times doctors are quick to call it something else just so insurance will pay for the visit. While initial assessment can always change down the road, it's horrible to think that a doctor will blow through an appointment with you just to get you on your way and write down some sort of diagnosis. Dr. Wilson tunes into the fact that listening to your body can tell you so many things, and when the adrenal glands start getting tired it can cause so many other problems.
How Does Adrenal Fatigue Occur?
Adrenal fatigue occurs when your adrenal glands can no longer help your body overcome stress normally. This is the same idea as when your immune response is weakened when you get sick with a cold or the flu. In fact, these hormones are partially responsible for getting your immune system to kick in, and regulate your energy production. When these glands don't work you begin to feel run down, and thus the "adrenal fatigue" begins to set in.
Anyone can experience this syndrome simply because stress is a normal part of life. Those who suffer from various autoimmune diseases are most likely to experience the type of symptoms that those with adrenal fatigue get. As always, speak to your doctor about your symptoms and let them know how you feel. If they don't listen, then you may need to find a new doctor.
