The Facts on Clinical Depression

Depression is a mental disorder that is usually characterized by long periods of sadness. Experts say a person may be overwhelmed by melancholy often in these cases of depression.

The symptoms of depression can be vague sometimes. But if a feeling of loss of self esteem, feeling of emptiness, and no hope of happiness goes further many times, then that individual may well be suffering from depression.

There are some types of depression. Manic/Bipolar depression occurs due to sudden changes in a person's mood when one moment the person is very happy while in the next moment very sad. Postpartum depression happens in new mothers and causes feelings of sadness and emptiness due to vague senses of unknown responsibility towards the baby. Dysthimia is similar to depression disorder but it is less severe but in any case it needs to be attended to immediately. Cyclothemia is characterized by likeness with manic depression. Here the individual suffers from sudden fluctuations in his or her moods. SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder happens when a person suffers from feelings of falling into a lowdown but only during particular seasons. It seems more people feel let down during winter and fall. The last variety of depression is mood swings in which a person's mood suddenly keeps swinging between happiness, sadness and anger in a very short span of time.

Clinical or major depression is the medical term to call depression. It is more of an ailment than an illness. It covers those who suffer from the symptoms of depression. When doctors refer to 'depression' they usually mean clinical depression. It is only a medical term.

Though it is an actual disorder, the clinical depression can be treated. Psychiatrists are very optimistic that patients with Clinical depression can be easily routed towards good mental fitness. But the diagnosis has to happen in an early phase. Patients who take treatment for clinical type of depression have often succeeded. About 80% of clinical depression patients that have undergone treatment have been relieved from this disorder. This should be encouraging to the patient.

For the curious who may have questions regarding clinical depression, it is advisable to visit your local health center. There are also books available on psychiatry and you are also advised to refer to the Internet. There is a lot of information available regarding clinical depression. Self medication or treatment is not approved upon generally. Clinical depression usually does not pose that much threat as with other kinds of depression disorders. But it is always best to seek for professionals if you are affected by this disorder.
