Omeprazole is known by the brand names Prilosec and Rapinex in the United States and as Losec in Canada. It was introduced as a prescription medication in 1986 and as a non prescription drug in 2003 for over the counter use. The over the counter medication is known as Prilosec OTC. Omeprazole (Prilosec) is available in capsule form in several forms:
immediate release capsules, in the dosages of 10mg, 20mg, (40 mg in Canada)
delayed release capsules, in the dosages of 10mg, 20mg
sustained release capsules, in the dosages of 10mg, 20mg
timed release capsules, in the dosage of 20mg
Omeprazole (Prilosec) is an effective treatment for gastric acid conditions such as heartburn, GERD, reflux esophagitis, gastric ulcers, and duodenal ulcers. It is primarily targeted in ads for heartburn treatment, as a once a day medication to prevent or cure heartburn. Daily taking of any medication should be cleared by a doctor first, even if its "just an over the counter drug". Remember that these over the counter drugs start out as prescriptions and usually aren't changed when they become over the counter drugs.
There are a few side effects possible with Omeprazole (Prilosec). These include increased likelihood of campylobacter infections. There may be some allergic reactions, headaches, dizziness, diarrhea, ringing in ears, drowsiness, or weakness. If you experience any of these side effects, please see your doctor so that he can monitor your usage and to test you for possible bacterial infection.
Omeprazole (Prilosec) should not be taken by individuals who have had a history of liver disease, a history of bone marrow or blood cell disorders, or if you take an anti coagulant medication, or if you are currently taking the prescription drug diazepam (Valium).
Keep in mind that acid in the stomach prevents and prohibits formation of some infections and that omeprazole (prilosec) may increase some of those bacterial infections due to its decrease of stomach acids. Check with your doctor before taking any medication whether it's a prescription or as the over the counter substitute. Prilosec and Prilosec OTC are popular drugs and can be found and most every pharmacy and general merchandise stores. They are also available through many online discount pharmacies where you can buy the generic in bulk.
