Objective: Take a raw egg and create a device that will keep the egg from cracking when dropped from a height of 6 meters.
Rules:
- You can not use any liquid or gas when building your device.
- You can not use glass when building your device.
- Your design can not be any longer or wider than 12 inches on each side.
Egg facts: Eggs have shells that are pretty strong. You may have trouble cracking it if you put it in the palm of your hand and try to squeeze it. You will, however, be able to crack it with ease if you smash a hard object up against the shell.
Tips:
- You are going to need to design a device that will keep the egg cushioned enough so that it won't crack upon impact.
- Besides cushioning your egg you are going to want the device to slow down the speed of the impact.
Grading: Students should be graded on two things. 1. Whether their design worked and 2. What they learned through the process. Have the students keep a notebook of all of their designs and attempt. The failed ones and the successful ones. In the notebook have student analyze why one method worked and why another didn't. Have the note book turned in at the end of the experiment and count it as 50% of the grade. The other 50% comes from the successful or unsuccessful egg drop.
