The Fashion Industry Needs a New Size Group

Senior Women Petite

Vicki Messer
I've watched a lot of television programs that show us all the newest looks in clothing, shoes and hairstyles. Even though I am in my 60s now, I still enjoy seeing all the latest trends. I know most of those clothes won't work on my body, but there was a time when I could have worn anything. I was always a petite little thing with an extremely fast metabolism. Fat was not found anywhere on my body. That is no longer true and I sure do miss my metabolism!

One problem that I have discovered as I am aging, however, is that being a petite presents a new set of problems. The industry that sizes clothing assumes that everyone becomes quite large as they age, and that simply is not true. They have created a size group called "Women's Petites" that are geared for the more portly petite woman and come in sizes 14-26 Petite. Although I am moving on in years, I am not portly and the "Women's Petites" do not fit. I still shop in the "Petites" clothing, but I sure do have to be very careful about what I buy. Most of these clothes are designed for the younger set and if I'm not careful, I can come out of the store looking like I'm trying to return to my teen-age years. That is not a good look on a sixty-something woman.

So, I wish someone would come up with a whole new size group for us senior petites. Maybe they should even call it that, "Senior Petite". These clothes would come in sizes from 0 - 12 petite and would be designed for older women who are still slimmer and trimmer than the "Women's Petite" size group.

I'd like to see slacks and jeans that actually fit my aging body. That means no low rise jeans or slacks, no tight fitting jeans hugging my thighs and a little looseness across the derriere would be greatly appreciated. They would of course be designed just for those of us who are 5'4" and under. I'd like to see nice shirts and tops that don't allow "the girls" to be exposed. A little more coverage would be nice. I'd like to see dresses and skirts that nip in gently at the waist suggesting a waistline without hugging it and then a soft flowing skirt that just drifts away from the body, and a length that is modest but not dowdy. I'd also like to see these size groups in all the major department stores so they don't cost so much that they consume all of my social security check in order for me to look nice.

Am I asking too much of the fashion industry? There happens to be a lot of us out here looking for clothes that fit our aging bodies. Most of us are no longer size 2 or size 4, but we aren't into the Women's Petite size group either. Give us a break. We don't want to look like frilly little girls, we want to look like the attractive, mature women we are. How about a new size group for Senior Petite Women, we need some help.

I knew it wasnt my imagination that the clothes have been "re-sized". Desperate to find some decent petite clothes and found this site. Wonderful. I have older size 6 pants, then down to 4 and now size 2 and I have even gained a few pounds. Biggest gripe is the styles. Just turned 61 and shopping is no fun because all is geared to younger or old and frumpy. And I am neither. More power to this group of women!!! The fashion industry is missing out on a large group of women with money to spend.

Petite women really do have it tough. While not in that size group (partially because some petites have height requirement) it is tricky trying to find the balance between a youthful or age appropriate look and one that appears too babyish or too mature. Excellent article!

here in canada it is worse, we don't have the same sizes as you guys have especially in quebec and I end up having to buy my clothes from the states because that is the only place I can find clothes, I am a big woman

It's nuts! I haven't lost any weight, but I've gone from a size 4 to 0 because they've "re-sized" the clothes! but some of these "0" clothes assume we all want to dress like Britney Spears!~

Stylish clothes that fit our aging bodies and don't reveal too much (or too little) would be great!

My mom would love if this idea became a reality.

    Excellent point.

I can see your point and agree with it, but considering that it has taken decades for the fashion industry to admit the existence of women over size 14, good luck!
