that silent night of stars
we sank our toes into the river of joni
and named the mitchell and collins clouds
the children left our fireflies in the garden
and poured instead their breath in mason jars
and flowers unplucked meant melodies left singing
in silent tones that sank beneath the waves
their lullabies are drifting like a snowstorm
and joni takes each child by the hand
but each recoils and runs to secret gardens
and how it grows no one but judy knows
but we stormed the field from both sides now
bared barded lines and still somehow
we found the dandelion's manes left white
not blown against the night

Thank you all for your comments!
Lovely
Great poem.
Thanks, all, for your comments! Lucky, I've enjoyed finding ways to incorporate Ms. Mitchell into several poems lately, though I don't know exactly where the sudden urge came from. There are also a few Robert Frost references (i.e., "left our fireflies in the garden" is a reference to Frost's Fireflies in the Garden). The poem originally had more references to Frost, and in fact the walk was originally *with* Frost, instead of lullabies, but artistically I decided against the more "direct" references to him! :)
I LOVE the way you worked Joni Mitchell's music into this poem, and the imagery is wonderful too!
Fine imagery. Nicely done.
