Conclusion of the policing the Internet Series
This series has been looking at the health risk for children using the Internet. We have already discussed how non parental guidance gives children the freedom to be looking at and listening to things that are not age appropriate and can lead to physical (carrying out the behaviors they see and listen to) and mental health issues.
The Canadian government mandates Internet providers to report to the government when a complaint has been lodged that one of their customers has abused copyright laws. These Internet providers will not be prosecuted by law but will have to police the customer's activity for 6 months afterward.
Again people are asking where is the line between the copyright act and our privacy act? Do we have any privacy at all?
Will Internet providers comply?
Montreal Videotron does because they sent this examiner's son a warning when he uploaded something from Torrence. Why are places like Torrence or the Pirate Bay allowed to operate on the Internet if it is illegal? These places advertise free downloads.
Then there are places that do not track the ISP but they are still sharing pirated ware, like Napster and Kazaa.
Most Montrealers really do not know some of these places are operating illegally. Why are they not shutdown?
Incidentally this examiner's son only did the upload once, and his ISP was recorded, he doesn't do it anymore. It is not worth the hassle just to share sometime with your friends on the net.
According to CTV News, the Canadian Recording Industry lost their appeal in the Canadian Appeal Court to force the ISP servers to release the names and addresses of 29 people who were suspected of trading music with other people on the net.
Where is this all leading?
Note: Since the original posting of this series many of the illegal downloading sites have been closed down.

Good information to know. Thanks, Carol.
Interesting topic. I signed up to one of these sites many years ago and had no idea they were operating illegally. All of a sudden, the site was pulled.
