The Fight for Tolerance

Donna Cavanagh
So many preach the gift of tolerance
But have so little of it to give
Tolerance fades when the blame game erupts
"It's your fault" replaces "live and let live"

Tolerance is a word many love to use
But they do not understand its heart
They wrap it in rules and disguise its face
And twist it until it falls apart

And what would we be without tolerance
Angry and self-important souls
Who find fault in everyone who is not like ourselves
Who fight to the death to keep control

Arrogance and intolerance go hand in hand
They grow stronger when we look away
Tolerance requires care and tending
And it will disappear if it finds no reason to stay
