The Final "Most Intriguing Writer" Award

Our February, 2011 Award Winning Contributor

Charlotte Kuchinsky
It's with a combination of joy and a heavy heart that I write this highlight article for February's "Most Intriguing Writer." It will be the very last one I ever write. That thought is difficult to process because I think AC has so many talented writers that never get the accolades they deserve.

However, rather than focus on the negative, I'll set my sights on the positive. The choice of this writer makes my heart dance with happiness. Not only is he talented both in fiction and non-fiction, but he's never afraid to speak his mind. I respect that.

When it comes to poetry, this writer is definitely intriguing. He can express so much in so few words that it boggles the mind. Better still, he does it with absolute eloquence. That is rare. Most poets have a few off days. This one never does.

When is comes to articles, this writer shares his expertise to give his readers insight into the subject matter. But he does it in a way the reader may have never thought about before. He provokes thought, tantalizes the mind and inspires the soul.

One of my personal favorite writers and someone I appreciate being able to call "friend," this writer is truly one of a kind. His name is David Reinstein.

Judge Lori Gunn cited one of David's articles entitled "Cherry Picking Ideas" as one of the reasons for her choice of this writer. She says the article "explores the human tendency to frantically explore any area, known or unknown, for validation of one's own belief, cause, or feeling."

David also points out that they go forward, "ignoring the other fruit in the garden of answers." To them, "the one piece of fruit that justifies an action is eagerly plucked and held dear." It is an apt analysis of how many people handle difficult situations.

Harriet Reinstein, another judge, says, "David is a very prolific poet. His poems are thought provoking and leave the reader with food for thought. He is also a talented singer and guitar player. I enjoy hearing his CD's."

Some of David's other fans wanted to express their feelings about his work too. Maria Malone offers the following. "Congratulations, David on this well deserved achievement!!"

Asked why she has chosen David as one of her favorites, Maria answers, "as a newer contributor on Associated Content and a subscriber of David Reinstein's, I enjoy reading David's articles and poems. They are always passionate and he is not afraid to tackle tough subjects in a straight forward and often poetic manner."

Another fan, Marilyn French, says, "that's so great for him. I appreciate the creative way David gets people thinking about the world."

Melissa Matters adds, "David always gives each topic an unique spin. His work is truly intriguing and a joy to read."

While I noted a large amount of women favoring David's work, he is not without his male fans too. Darren Koobs notes, "David Reinstein is not just one of my favorite Y!/AC contributors. He is one of my favorite writers anywhere."

He goes on to add, "hallmarks of David's work are originality, intelligence, and high quality craftsmanship. David knows his topics well and presents them with his own, unique voice. He always makes me think. Always. And he often makes me smile and laugh, too."

David does indeed have the ability to make you think. He does it in a clever, entertaining way that also encourages a belly laugh here and there. His work is always respectful, well thought out and unique. That is what makes him so intriguing and such a natural choice for this award.

Special thanks go out to Lori Gunn, Mike Powers and Harriet Steinberg for judging this final award. Reading three pieces by each nominee (which is about 60 articles) is no small feat. Despite the challenge, they handled it with grace, dignity and thorough attention to detail. Thank you!

It's now time to say goodbye to my "Most Intriguing Writer" series. That is truly hard for me. It has been such a pleasure recognizing AC writers. I will miss doing that. It will leave a giant hole in my heart.

To all of you who have won one of these awards in the last four years, let me say this. You ARE the best. Don't let anyone tell you anything different. You have talent, foresight, passion and drive. More than that; however, you have something worth saying. Never, ever let your voice be silenced!

Congrats to David! He is a man of many talents. Thank you, Charlie, for all the time you put into the series. I know it wasn't an easy task. I really appreciated winning the humor award this year; it came at a time when I was doubting myself as a writer and gave me the motivation to push forward. :)
