Beginning in the first quarter, Lakers appeared to have no direction or game plan. Their shots were not there, prompting Kobe Bryant to be the sole shooter as he managed to hit three shots from the 3 point line. But just as soon as he had been hot, Bryant cooled off and for the remainder of the game had a complete shooting drought, as did most of the Lakers players.
The Lakers didn't show much sign of passion that they wanted this championship badly in the whole game. It was all Boston hustling, stealing ball, getting rebounds, and going that extra mile. I am still a big Lakers fan, but I must admit it was a disappointing show tonight from the Lakers and a great game by the Celtics.
Boston fought really hard from the get go. They played with passion, and always seemed to be two steps ahead of the Lakers. Their defense was simply impressive. They played a great 48 minutes team game with shots falling well for them. They were the better team tonight and thus deserved their win.
It is a disappointing end to the Lakers' one of a kind season. The season began with star player Kobe Bryant demanding to be traded, only to end the regular season with Lakers having the best record in the western conference and Kobe garnering the NBA's MVP honor. They appeared to be on a mission to win it all, easily eliminating the Denver Nuggets in four games and losing only three games combined against the Utah Jazz and the San Antonio Spurs. I must say that I was a believer that this is the year the Lakers would win it all, fueled by Kobe's first MVP award in the regular season.
But we can't take anything away from the Celts. They played their hearts outs. They defended their home court and for the first time in the playoffs, Lakers suffered their first home loss. Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and the entire squad and coach of the Celtics all deserve their win. They showed that they wanted the trophy more and that desire intrinsically motivated them to overpower the Lakers.
This may sound odd from a true Lakers' fan, but I must say congratulations to the Boston Celtics, 2008 NBA Champions! For the Lakers; mission not accomplished, but we'll try next year.
