The Fire Island Light House celebrated its 150-year anniversary this past weekend. People from all over Long Island flocked to Babylon, New York to Robert Moses State Park to participate.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. people could join in the festivities, which included live music provided by the West Islip String Ensemble, programs and demonstrations, children's arts and crafts, U.S Coast Guard demonstration and the cutting of the cake with a special recognition ceremony.

Tours of the Light House tower were reduced to $2 per person and served as an educational and fun way for kids and adults alike to learn about the rich history of the lighthouse, which the Coast Guard set to decommission in 1973 because it was no longer needed for navigational purposes.

In 1979, the 82-acre Fire Island Light Station tract became part of the Fire Island National Seashore (FINS), a unit of the National Park System.

In 1982, the Fire Island Light house Preservation Society was formed, with $1.5 million raised four years later, in 1986, for the re-lighting, restoration and preservation of the light house. The National Park Service began restoration that same year.
