The First Day of School

But Momma Do I Have to Go?

Lee Hansen

The little girl grabbed her mother's leg as if holding on for dear life. It didn't matter that she was sporting a brand new backpack of her own for the daycare she would be attending.

Her tears continued rolling down her face. She wanted to go on the bus with her big brother and his friends down the street. Jack was very protective of his little sister. They had such fun this summer. In her mind, it just wasn't fair.

No doubt many of you have experienced or witnessed a similar scene with your children or someone from your neighborhood.

I couldn't help but think back to my first day of school. For some reason it still stands out in my mind. My mother and I took the short walk up the street to my school. I was 5 years old and just entering kindergarten. Admittedly I was scared and nervous. I didn't have to tell my mom. She already knew.

Neither did I tell her about the little boy named Stanley who was teasing me behind her back. She knelt down and asked if I wanted her to stay a little longer. Even though I did I also wanted to prove that I was a big girl.

No sooner had she left that I "cried like a river". And why did I do that? Stanley just teased me more and said I was a big baby. But I made it and Momma was so proud of me. Mrs. Marino, my teacher made it a very special day.

There's never a year that goes by that I don't reflect back on that memory as I see children preparing for their first day of school. I guess it goes to show you there's always a little kid left in all of us, no matter how old we get.

Do you remember your first day of school?

I don’t remember my first day of school. Probably because I attended Pre-Preschool so I was to young to remember.

In a way, we are babies and get butterflies in our stomachs till, maybe, our last days! Your first day of school resonates among all. I remember walking out to the vast wide world on the way to school with "veterans"! A touching piece, Lee - siva

Interesting memories. Thanks for sharing. I don't remember my first day of school, so it must not have been traumatic. :)

It was fun to hear the reaction of our grand-daughter's first day of all day kindergarten this month. I can't remember mine.
