The First Iranian Nuclear Power Plant Completed

Let's All Hope Israel Isn't Scared into Action

According to GlobalSecurity.org, August 21, 2010 will forever be marked as the day the Islamic Republic of Iran attained a major milestone towards nuclear status.

The Bushehr facility is a $1 Billion project, built by Russian technicians and powered by Russian fuel. Just twelve kilometers outside of the city of Bushehr. Iranian officials are celebrating the opening of the facility as a triumph for their country.

Iran's nuclear history has been a difficult start. As far back as 1974, the nation had nuclear aspirations to provide power. That was back when one of the oldest nations on Earth had backing from Western society. Since then, the project's been halted, looted, and re-started, with the help of the Russians in the mid-nineties. Even this phase of progress has been occasionally stalled by claims of failure to make payments.

Here in the US, it's generally believed that, Iran's nuclear intentions may not be all that peaceful. The common, majority opinion seems to be one which places Iran behind groups like Al-Qaida, and now it's powered by Russian nuclear materials. Evidence both for and against Iran having nuclear capacity is daily shared in the media. Now that the Islamic Republic of Iran has a modern power facility, there may soon also be clearer talk of pre-emptive war against the nation.

Meanwhile others, such as former British Ambassador to Iran Richard Dalton, are pointing out the general consensus amongst most other nations is that the finally completed nuclear reactor is a "legitimate activity." Operations at the nuclear power plant are overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) the United Nations agency concerned with atomic energy. Their job is to ensure the 1,000 megawatt station adheres to it's intended mission of making peaceful electricity for the country's citizens.

As sworn enemies of Israel, and having what Saddam always wanted but could never have, Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, is adamant that "Despite all pressures, sanctions, and hardships imposed by Western nations, we are witnessing the start-up of the largest symbol of Iran's peaceful nuclear activities." Let's hope it just stays peaceful and Israel senses no need to perform any sort of a strike against the Beshehr nuclear power facility.
