The First Sonic Drive-Ins Open In Northern New Jersey: What's a Sonic Drive-In?
Sonic Drive-Ins are car hop style fast food restaurants. Menu items include: hamburgers, sandwiches, corn dogs, wraps, and over 168,000 drink combos. A new menu item is introduced every month.
The First Sonic Drive-Ins Open In Northern New Jersey: Police are called to control traffic
In June and July of this year, Sonic Drive-In opened two new restaurants in Northern New Jersey: Hasbrouck Heights and Totowa. Both are located less than 25 miles outside New York City. The Sonic Drive-In in Hasbrouck Heights caused such bad traffic jams within its first two weeks of being open that police are still stationed along the highway near the entrance to let customers know if the parking lot is full. Rumors had surfaced that the first day Sonic Drive-In opened in Hasbrouck Heights, they actually ran out of food! However, I spoke to an employee at this particular restaurant who claims that did not happen.
The Sonic Drive-In in Totowa New Jersey had similar issues with traffic jams and needed police to contain the situation. When I drove past that Sonic Drive-In on Sunday July 5th at 5:30pm, police were parked along the shoulder of the highway holding a sign that read parking lot full.
Neither of these Sonic Drive-Ins in Northern New Jersey have a restaurant inside to eat in. Everything is drive through or sit and order at one of the 20 or so parking stalls. That explains some of the traffic problems.
The First Sonic Drive-Ins Open In Northern New Jersey: Why is it so popular?
There were only three Sonic Drive-Ins in New Jersey before the ones in Hasbrouck Heights and Totowa opened. The first one in Waretown opened in 2007, followed by Millville and Rio Grande. And all three of them are in South New Jersey. Also take into consideration that there are NO Sonic Drive-Ins in New York City or its surrounding areas of Westchester and Rockland Counties and Long Island. So the novelty of the Sonic Drive-In in the Northern New Jersey and New York areas is helping to fuel its attraction.
The First Sonic Drive-Ins Open In Northern New Jersey: How can you avoid the crowds and the traffic?
According to an employee at the Hasbrouck Heights New Jersey Sonic Drive-In, the best time to go to avoid traffic and crowds is between 6am and 10am. Despite the morning hours, you can order breakfast items and regular foods at any time of the day. The hours of operation are 6am to midnight when the last order is placed.

Post a CommentWe've had Sonics in Mississippi for years. In fact, they are smart enough to put one in every small town that can't get fast food restaurants. They did away with one of their best things, which was their chili pie. What a shame. Good article.
We have way too many of them down south. My husband loves Sonic, I can't stand the idiot guys in the Sonic commercials! But I'm originally from NJ and I don't think the area needs more junk food!
Yum, I love Sonic. They also have an In n' Out here in Las Vegas and they have the best fries.
Yay hopefully they will work their way to CT
We have about 3 or 4 Sonics here, I can't imagine such an overwhelming response, lol. I've never been a big fan of their food, though I do like the old fashioned feel. Great article :)
There's a Sonic in Fredericksburg, VA (Well, technically Massaponnax) but let me tell you, it's always packed. It has a nostalgic feel ala Happy Days when you went to a burger joint and people brought the food to your car. I think that's a huge part of their appeal. Sign up for their emails - kids get a free meal coupon near the time of their birthday.
