The First Two Weeks of Gestation

What's Going on in There?

It is official, you are pregnant and new life has begun in your precious womb. Fetal growth begins the instant that the ripe ovum, also known as your egg, joins with the sperm in the fallopian tubes. These two amazing cells fused to become one and is currently smaller than the period you will find at the end of this sentence. In the first few hours of their meeting, the egg and sperm began dividing into other cells and are still dividing as we speak. While they are dividing, these cells are tumbling along to plant themselves in your uterus, where they will spend the next nine months developing into your soon to be baby!

Once the bundle of cells latch on and implant into the uterine wall they will continue to divide a rapid pace and become the placenta that will connect to the developing umbilical cord, which will be your baby's lifeline until birth, carrying much needed nutrients. The umbilical cord is vital as it also oversees what goes into your baby while he/she is growing. It acts as a filter to ward off most harmful substances and allows for your body to dispose of them properly. In the first two weeks of gestation, your baby is just getting nestled in and the beginnings of this precious journey has just begun!
