The Fisherman

Don Rothra
I used to sit upon the shore,

And cast my line so far.

I had to reach the middle,

Where all the big fish are.

Then I went and bought a boat,

And I don't know what for.

I sit out in the middle,

And cast my line to shore.

A fisherman's a funny thing,

He's neither fowl nor beast,

He's just a man who drowns a worm

To give the fish a feast.

And when he's finished with his trip,

And talks about his day.

He's always got to talk about,

The one that got away.

The fish may get away, but it has to be the peace and quiet of just being out there that settles the soul. Good job Don.

I do love it, and you are so right. My husband was a fisherman, and he loved to talk about the one "that got away". If you want to read about an extreme OPPOSITE to the one that got away, read my "Hunting Trip", (If you haven't already).

Give a man a fish, he will eat for one day... Teach a man how to fish, he will eat for all his days. Wish I could claim the credit for that... and for this great poem!
