The Five Best Bike-Friendly Cities

Marilyn Quinn
Albuquerque, New Mexico - Dedicated bike lanes, city programs to encourage commuting by bike and over 400 miles of bike paths and trails, and more in the works; this puts Albuquerque in our top 5 bicycle-friendly cities in the U.S. You can get free trail maps from the city or from any local bike shop. Albuquerque's mass transit system is equipped with bike racks to aid commuters and the city also offers a Guaranteed Ride Home program to aid cyclists who have emergencies and need a ride when they have used their bike to commute.

Boulder, Colorado - Boulder has more than 300 city miles dedicated to bikeways. They even have a whole month dedicated to the cycling community. June is Walk & Bike Month in boulder. The event was first celebrated in 1977 as Bike to Work Day and has grown and continues to encourage commuters to explore biking as optional transportation.

Davis, California - Davis is a city that is serious about it's bike culture. Here is a city that has not public school busses, so many students walk or ride their bike to school. The culture of cycling here is so strong, the city logo is a bicycle. May is a month-long celebration of the bicycle called Cyclebration. Free maps of bike routes are distributed through the city, university, and local bike shops. What clinched Davis as one of our top 5 cities was the fact that bicycles outnumber cars there.

Portland, Oregon - As a city with 7,399 bike parking spaces; Portland is a must for the top 5 cities list. Portland has close to 200 miles of bikeways; 100 miles of blue bike lanes. Portland also has a bicycle sharing system that provides short-term bike rentals.

Austin, Texas - Austin has over 50 miles of scenic paths into all areas of the city. They also sport a 3 mile paved looped track called the Veloway that is open only to bike and rollerblade traffic only. Austin is also home to the University of Texas, where biking is a popular mode of transportation; as it is throughout Austin. The Austin Cycling Association is the place to go to find popular rides and to learn about the Armadillo hill Country Classic that takes place in the Texas hill country.
