The Five Best Chest Congestion Medicines

Karla Widzins
Nothing is worse than waking up for work or school, and you realize you feel stuffy and congested. Your chest is heavy and you can't breathe, so you wonder, "What is the best chest congestion medicine?" Five of the best are Vicks VapoRub, Vicks Formula 44 Custom Care Chesty Cough, Tylenol Chest Congestion, Mucinex, and Robitussin Chest Congestion.

The Vicks family is by far the best over-the-counter chest congestion medicines. They sell a number of medications related to colds, but Vicks VapoRub and Vicks Formula 44 Custom Care Chesty Cough are excellent for chest congestion. They will loosen the congestion and help you breathe easier. Vicks VapoRub is the best selling over-the-counter medication in its class, and because it is a topical medication, it will not interfere with other drugs or cause nasty side effects. Vicks Formula 44 Custom Care Chesty Cough comes in a liquid, and contains 400 mg of the over-the-counter drug guaifenesin. A dosage of one tablespoon lasts four hours.

Tylenol Chest Congestion is also a fine over-the-counter medication. Besides helping with the congestion, it also contains acetaminophen, and will relieve the aches, pains, and fevers associated with a cold. It comes in a liquid or tablet. The recommended dosage of liquid is two tablespoons or two caplets every 4 hours. Each dosage contains 400 mg guaifenesin.

Of the five, Mucinex is by far the most expensive. The product claims to relieve congestion for 12 hours. It too contains over-the-counter drug guaifenesin. One or two tablets are recommended every four hours. Each tablet contains 600 mg of guaifenesin.

Robitussin, like the others, contains guaifenesin. The dosage is similar to Vicks. Only four teaspoons are recommended, but it still contains 400 mg of the active ingredient. It too last four hours.

There are many over-the-counter chest congestion medicines on the market today, and you have been introduced to five of them. If you take any other medication, especially those for high blood pressure, remember to ask your doctor which one is best for you. I would recommend the Vicks VapoRub and Formula 44 Custom Care Chesty Cough taken together to completely knock out your chest congestion.
