The Five Best Fishing Locations in the Cobleskill, Schoharie County in New York State

You Will Find Out Where to Fish in and Around Cobleskill, New York

Richard McDuff
I will be discussing the best fishing locations in and around Cobleskill, New York. These are my favorite local fishing spots that I enjoy fishing. Where to fish in the five local fishing spots will be covered in this article.

1) The best fishing location is the Cobleskill Reservoir, which consists of three ponds. This local fishing spot is beaming with activity in April when the ice starts to break up. The Cobleskill Suny College stocks this several times between April and June each year with rainbow, brook, brown and tiger trout which are released into one pond. One of my favorite fish is the tiger trout, they are great fighting fish and exciting to catch on a fly rod. The average size for these tiger trout is 15 to 19 inches. I catch most of them on dark wooly buggers. In two of the other ponds there is perch, panfish, smallmouth and largemouth bass and the Suny College is introducing Walleye into one pond to keep down the panfish population. No boats are allowed on these ponds.

2) Schoharie Reservoir is one of the local fishing spots worth checking out. The Schoharie Reservoir is full of Brown trout, rainbow trout, brook trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass. The Power authority has awarded $20,000 contribution to help SUNY Cobleskill to construct hatchery ponds to support the raising of walleye fingerlings for use in stocking the Schoharie reservoirs. This should make the fishing of Schoharie reservoir one of the best fishing locations in Schoharie County. You will need a free New York City Public Access Permit in order to fish this reservoir However, all anglers must possess a valid New York State fishing license when fishing on New York City Reservoirs. You can register a boat, but the boat must stay at the Reservoir.

3) The Schoharie reservoir drains into the Schoharie Creek, one of the famous trout fishing Catskill creeks. This creek is constantly being stocked with rainbow and brown trout. It is also a great local fishing spot for bass and walleye (which are found in the lower end of the creek before it empties into the Hudson River). Most walleyes are caught after dark.

4) The Vlaie - This pond is the best fishing location for pickerel, smallmouth and largemouth bass, perch and one of my favorite eating fish - the crappie. I have fished this pond when it was frozen. I have also fished it from a rubber raft. The water is too shallow for a full outboard boat. You can use a row boat, a tube or a rubber raft to fish this pond.

5) Ostego Lake - this is one of the larger lakes in my local fishing location. The best local fishing spot is the most northern part of the lake. I have fished using an outboard motor, from shore and a rubber raft for the smallmouth and largemouth bass. Ostego lake is populated with lake trout, brown trout, Atlantic salmon, large and small mouth black bass, rock bass, sunfish, chain pickerel, yellow perch, carp and bullhead. If you want the salmon or lake trout you have to go out in a boat and fish deep.

There are so many more ponds and creek to fish in and around the Cobleskill area, I wish I could cover them all.
