The Five Best Music Blogs, 2009

Scott Allan
More than a few people have asked me recently where they can find new music. Radio stations have tight playlists, and people don't know where to go to find the latest cutting-edge songs.

You can always find music news at places like mtv.com, but they focus mainly on mainstream music. If you're specifically looking for "good music that isn't played on the radio," here are five music blogs worth checking out.

Pitchfork Media (www.pitchfork.com)

This site has seemingly been around forever. They're more of a news and reviews site, rather than a place to download music, although they do occasionally offer mp3s for download. Pitchfork reviews are sometimes criticized for being elitist, but few sites are as respected in the world of indie rock. Pitchfork even holds its own music festival every summer in Chicago, featuring a bunch of the latest buzzworthy indie bands.

Music for Kids Who Can't Read Good (www.musicforants.com)

This site isn't quite as huge as some of the others, but that's part of its appeal. This is a good place to come to find out about new bands, since they often write about new, up-and-coming acts before many other sites. And take note of their concert photography - it's absolutely top-notch.

Stereogum (www.stereogum.com)

This site has one of the larger collections of music available for download. Posts are written in a witty, edgy style that keeps readers coming back. Also worth mentioning is their partner site, www.videogum.com, which highlights some of the most fascinating video clips on the internet.

Culture Bully (www.culturebully.com)

A nicely-designed, visually-appealing resource with interviews, reviews, and the latest music news, this Minneapolis-based blog does a great job of covering it all. They're good at posting clips of tv performances - if your favorite band performed on Jimmy Kimmel or Conan O'Brien last night, they'll probably post the video clip here the next morning.

Brooklyn Vegan (www.brooklynvegan.com)

This site reports heavily on concerts going on in Brooklyn, but it's a reliable resource for anyone interested in the latest indie music news. Plus, odds are that whatever bands are big in Brooklyn are going to be breaking through nationally, so this site can help you stay ahead of the curve. They have a huge readership; most posts feature a few dozen comments.

These are all great starting point blogs. I've been enjoying alternate format blogs as of late. One local 'blog' to the LA area that i've been listening to is playmixgroup.com. They put out a strictly music release for download every month or so. Good way to enjoy music without having to filter through the hundreds of posts on most blogs.

I'm sorry but I don't agree with Pitchfork being included in this article. Yes, Pitchfork at one time was considered a blog in their beginning years but they have since moved from said status in my opinion. A blog in my mind is a small website usually run by one or two people being updated minimally throughout the day, usually focusing on very specific topics in their posts. Pitchfork was this at one time but now updates throughout the day in the realm of news, record reviews, multimedia updates and much more. It is run by a dedicated collective of paid staff. It's like calling ESPN.com a sports blog. I'd ditch Pitchfork, although a very good music news website, for Gorilla vs. Bear in a heartbeat.
