The Five Best Sci Fi Movies of All Time

Justin Lawrence
Choosing the five best sci movies of all time is a difficult task and requires that a certain approach be taken. For this list, only movies that have interesting philosophical concepts were chosen rather than movies that fit into the science fiction genre but are more orientated towards other story mechanics. As a result, none of the Star Wars movies made it to this list. Regardless, herein are the top five best sci fi movies of all time.

The Five Best Sci Fi Movies of All Time: 1. Minority Report

Minority Report mixes a realistic view of the future with great action sequences and some very interesting concepts. It explores a whole range of philosophical ideas, from the function of punishment in a society to free will and fate, doing so in a very understandable manner. This combination makes Minority Report the best science fiction film.

The Five Best Sci Fi Movies of All Time: 2. Solaris

Solaris tells the story of a planet that reads minds and has a giant 'living' sea upon it. However, what makes Solaris truly stand out is the manner in which it explores humanity's inability to comprehend entities that are particularly different from being human. It also explores a whole range of ideas, for instance if an apparition of a dead loved one suddenly appears and there is doubt as to why, should it be destroyed? Solaris asks very hard questions and as a result is number two on this list of the five best science fiction films.

The Five Best Sci Fi Movies of All Time: 3. Jurassic Park

Perhaps a surprising inclusion to this list, Jurassic Park is actually one of the best science fiction films because it effortlessly explores a whole range of ideas from the power of nature to the inevitable fallibility of any system as well as the ethics of science. It does this via some great intellectual discussions between characters that each channel the sort of personalities that become academics. This combination makes Jurassic Park one of the best sci fi movies of all time.

The Five Best Sci Fi Movies of All Time: 4. The Matrix

The Matrix stood out for its incredible action sequences and special effects, but should have stood out for the complexity of the idea. It contains the best exploration of virtual reality, and hence the nature of reality itself, in any film to date. Furthermore, it explores a whole range of subjects from limitations of machines and the value of intuition as well as agency verse structure.

The Five Best Sci Fi Movies of All Time: 5. The Terminator

While time travel is precarious ground for any science fiction story, The Terminator manages to use it successfully as a plot device by ignoring its shortcomings and just going with it. What results is a deeply humane film on the topic of what it means to be human, rather than a machine imitating humanity.

Interesting choices... though it would have been nice if you could have clarified if you meant the original "Solaris" or the remake.

Lol forget Fareed! This article is opinion based....But you should really add the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers....or at least an article for classic sci-fi films...

The choices were not necessarily the best movies in their own right, but the best Science Fiction movies. District 9's moral message did not really need to be a Sci Fi, also it is an old message. Apartheid? Almost everyone agrees that apartheid in South Africa was wrong, it is not a confronting message at all. Terminator 2 is probably a better constructed film than the first, but the first has the most true sci fi elements as it explores humanity's illogical nature. That is to say that Kyle Reese risked his own life to save a woman in a different time period that he fell in love with by looking at a photo of. Terminator 2 does not really expand upon that idea.

Minority Report asks a whole host of complex questions, it explores the flaws of the binary opposition between criminal and non-criminal by throwing scenarios at us where even murder may be justified.

Terrible list. With the sole inclusion of "Jurassic Park", which was groundbreaking for it's time and still stands up today with a good plot and great acting from all cast members, it's the only movie on this list that made any sense to include. "Minority Report" at number 1? Horrible. I would suggest the reviewer rewatch movies such as "Terminator 2" and "District 9", assuming he's watched them in the first place.
