The Five Factions of the Spoils TCG

Five Different Factions One Single Goal

Robert Guinn
The Spoils is a relatively new card game to hit the gaming community. The game was designed by some of the top trading card game pros from around the nation, including world champions from Magic the Gather tournaments, and Yu-Gi-Oh. The game spent five years in development and just last year around September we received out first look at the Beta launch of this game. During November the game officially launched and at the begging of March the second set was released. Although the decks are new there are certain trends that are set fourth by the five different factions that the game focuses around.

During game play you control a deck that is filled with characters that represent one of five factions. There are the shrewd Bankers, the crafty Rouges, the powerful Warlords, then advanced Gearsmiths, and the cunning and devious Arcanist. Each has similar abilities, but their arch types are very well established.

Bankers of course strive for power and wealth, so it would only make sense that they would do the same in the card game. Bankers overall advantage is draw power, and as any veteran card player knows, holding all the right cards can be essential in winning the game. Bankers also host a ton of removal cards, meaning they don't have to use their strength to fight, but rather an assortment of tactics to win.

Rouge characters are always a fun vocation or faction to play around with. They have a lot of tricky cards that range from deck and hand destruction to character modifiers. Their main trait would have to be the manipulation factor and speed. Many cards in the deck boast 4 or 5 speed as compared to the average 2 or 3, this gives the Rouge faction a major advantage while attacking in the field. Also many character cards come into play during an opponent's turn, making them very unpredictable.

Warlords, there name says it all. This faction is all about power, and does a great job of delivering. They host the most powerful characters in the game and have amazing field presence. Many of their characters can attack high early on, but lack the life factor, also this faction has some of the only direct damage cards available in the game. That means attacking your foe from the inside out. Warlords can often score a big win early on with the right hand and a decent deck.

Gearsmiths are an interesting faction, focusing on items rather then on the characters as a whole. Many of the cards this faction control can easily up their attack to the double digits, making any single character as strong as the dreaded Dragon Tank. Gearsmiths also have a variety of cards that manipulate the resource pool, allowing for multiple characters, items and tactics to be played in a single turn. Gearsmiths are very technical in nature, and should be watched closely.

Finally we have the every mysterious Arcanist faction. This group is all about the manipulation of elements in the game. From hand control, deck destruction, and status manipulation these guys can pull just about anything off. They may not have the best speed or power in the game, falling somewhere in the middle, but they are an up and coming faction in the Spoils world.

So there you have a good outline of the five basic factions of the Spoils trading card game. Right now in the current environment Bankers seem to dominate, but fall victim to well balanced and crafted Gearsmith decks as well as some Arcanist decks. What we all love about this game is that the playing field seems to be balanced, not one single deck is dominate over the others. It's like rock paper scissors when it comes to this games meta, rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, and paper beats rock.

  • The content on the cards as far as artwork goes is many times very graphic and can be disturbing
  • The game is hard to pick up on
Character quotes on the cards often time represent popular culture. Check em' out if you get the chance, there quite funny
