The Five Most Disappointing Teams in College Football so Far This Year

Aaron Smith
It may be hard to believe, but the college football season is already halfway complete. The race for the title seems to be as wide open as ever as constant upsets rule the college football landscape. Rivalry season is yet to come so many things can still happen and teams that are off the radar now may still get on the radar before the season ends. At the halfway point there are a few teams who stand out as the most disappointing thus far this season. Who are they?

Five most disappointing teams at the halfway point of the season

5. Auburn- It's not as if Auburn is a terrible football team, they are far from it. The offense has been absolutely pathetic, and the defense has been terrific. The defense deserves to be undefeated, but the offense has been unable to put many points on the board against any top opponents. Just this past week the team replaced its offensive coordinator, so we will see if this does anything for an offense that has been downright offensive.

4. Wisconsin- The Badgers had two very heartbreaking loss in a row to Michigan and Ohio State. In both games they led in the fourth quarter only to finish on the losing end. They really need more production out of their passing game so that they can open up some more running room for their excellent running backs. The Badgers still play a couple top ranked schools so they have an opportunity to make plenty of noise in the second half of the season.

3. Arizona State- The preseason polls put Arizona State in the top 15, but this team is just 2-3 thus far this season. The season started looking ugly when they lost at home to unranked UNLV. If that wasn't bad enough, their star quarterback Rudy Carpenter is now battling injuries and unlikely to play in their next game or two. It's no surprise that Carpenter is banged up because the offensive line has done very little to protect him. The Sun Devils need to regroup or they may have trouble making a bowl game.

2. West Virginia- Heisman hopeful Pat White and the Mountaineers were expected to make a lot of noise in the national picture this year, but they are just 3-2 to start the year. They have lost two games to teams that they have no business losing to and have looked unimpressive in the games they have won. The offense has been much less dynamic than it was expected to be and the team seems to be unable to find its identity.

1. Clemson- There is no question that Clemson has been the biggest disappointment thus far this season. Clemson was ranked #9 in both of the preseason polls and was expected to run away with the ACC title. The team is now 1-2 in the ACC and 3-3 overall on the year. Tommy Bowden is sure to be under a whole lot of heat as this season goes on because this team just isn't playing up to its potential. Tiger fans are very upset because it seems to be becoming a trend that Clemson has tons of great athletes and yet disappoints year after year.

The football season has plenty of time left and now is the time we will find out what these teams are really made of. Some of these teams will likely show a lot of heart and be very successful in the second half, while others will pack it up and get ready for next year.

I really thought West Virginia could roll without Rodriguez and be an impact this year. As for Wisconsin...I just don't get it. A lot of promise for strengthening the status of the Big 10 at the beginning of the season and WHAM! I guess a close 6th for me would Illinois - I know Zook can get it done, in fact - I'm counting on it.
