With football being a sport that is always on the mind of it's fans, you sometimes lose perspective on a lot of things. We like to give people titles such as "great" or even "champion". After a while, those greats that were once considered as cream of the crop, turn out to be more deserving of another tag, overrated.
Overrated Football Coach: Spurrier.
The Old Ball Coach has been coaching ball for a lot of years now. South Carolina Gamecocks fans may out the guy on a high pedestal but he's really not all that special. The game has changed with time, but big Steve has yet to make proper adjustments that are needed to dominate the way some would expect his teams to every year.
Overrated Football Coach: Ditka.
I don't plan on going to Chicago, so I'll go ahead and say that Mike Ditka is pretty much a bum compared to everyone else on this list. While the others were consistent enough to make you think they were competent, Ditka went to coach the Saints and laid an egg. He didn't go winless, but he laid an egg filled with grizzly bear feces and goats milk. He went 15 - 33 before they finally decided he had done enough to "help" that, then sad franchise.
Ditka's fun as a television personality, but as a coach he's just some guy who didn't' get in the way of his players winning a Super Bowl. He also had that magazine cover where he married Ricky Williams. So that means he's got a good sense of humor, as well as being average as a coach. Cool beans.
Overrated Football Coach: Dungy.
As the polar opposite of what most football players and fans see as a leader, Tony Dungy managed to ride the coat tales of Payton Manning to win himself a Superbowl. Manning doesn't need a coach, he's the one running that Colts offense.Dungy was probably overseeing other parts off the team, but that offense was all about Payton being obsessed with the mechanics of football.
Overrated Football Coach: Tommy & Bobby Bowden.
The father and son combo of overrated football coaches. Maybe Bobby Bowden shouldn't be called overrated. If he had retired years ago, before being pushed out of Florida States program, then no body would have reason to call him out at all. Regardless, his son would still get the overrated tag for anything he did that was successful. Being Bobby's boy comes with extra praise that just get's nauseating after a while.

Post a CommentDitka actually did get in the way of his players up at Chicago. One year, they managed to overcome their lackluster coach and win a Super Bowl anyway. But with a better coach, that Bears team would've been a DYNASTY. Right up there with the 49ers of the 80s, the Cowboys of the 90s and the Patriots of the 2000s.
