The Five Signs of Spring

Winter seems to be the longest season of the year. All four seasons equally have three months but for some reason Winter still seems to last longer. In many areas the Winter months are hard to endure. They are bitterly cold and snow comes almost daily. These months really take a toll on us in many ways.

The first sign that shows us Spring will be coming soon is the sun. The sun is farther away from us in the Winter months. There are fewer hours of daylight. The sun does not shine in the Winter as it does in the Summer. In the Summer months the sun is close, full, warm and bright. In the Winter months it is distant, bright but not warm, close and comforting. When Spring is close the sun noticeably gets brighter. Look outside. Do you notice that it is looking brighter and warmer? Spring will be here soon. A good part of the reason that people feel so bla in the Winter months is because of this lack of sunlight. Our bodies need it to thrive.

The second sign that says Spring is coming soon is the return of the birds. When you see the birds come back you know Spring is near. Many people feel blue in the Winter because it is so quiet and lifeless. Most animals are scarcely seen, the rest are hibernating. The sights and sounds of life around us in the other seasons of the year become our surroundings, from the birds to the green grass. When they are gone we do not have all of that life blooming around us. We have only snow.

The third sign that tells us Spring will be coming soon is the temperature. The Winter months are so cold. People tend to stay inside a lot more. This contributes to the bla feeling we get during the Winter months. In the warmer seasons of the year we play outside more. We barbecue, or simply sit on the porch. We go for walks, hikes, bike rides, etc. We get outside more often. For many people many hours of their daily lives are spent outside during the warmer months. When the cold comes and drives us indoors we lose out on many of those activities. When Spring is near the temperatures warm and before you know it we'll be outside in the back yard once again cooking on the grill and playing with the kids.

The fourth sign that says Spring will be here soon is Groundhogs day. It's only days away now. They'll wake the adorable ground hog to see what he'll do. Will he see his shadow or not? How long will it be? Four more weeks or six? Either is fine with me. Spring is almost here when Groundhog's day is near. Just simply knowing that Spring will make an appearance within six weeks can make you feel better. Winter truly is almost over. No more snow and ice. Nice clear roads and long, warm, sunny days are just ahead.

The fifth sign that indicates Spring is coming soon is the sky. The Winter sky is not as beautiful and bright as the Spring, Summer and Fall skies are. A Winter sky is generally overcast and gray. The grayness of the sky can leave us feeling bla too. When the blue skies make a return you know Spring is near. The beauty returns. The colors of the sunset and the stars of the night. Blue skies make us feel good.
