The Flamboyant Bird

Abby Normal
When I was a baby bird
I was only blue
I knew in my heart
that this would never do

We can be just one color
if we want to stay free
Choosing many colors
would mean "Captivity"

I could feel many more colors
hidden deep inside
Should I tell my parents
I struggled to decide

The cost of choosing color
would shake the family tree
would my family love me
would they even speak to me

I'd rather be a Flamboyant Bird
living in a cage
than live with this denial
this feeling - inner rage

I tried to be a blue bird
I didn't really have a choice
When I accepted all of my colors
I discovered my inner voice

I know my family loves me
and they do really care
Why do those other blue birds
have to heckle me or stare

Now people come from miles around
and it's ME they've come to see
To each and every person I say,
"To Our Freedoms, YOU hold the key!"
