The Florida Gators Need a Coach

Brian Kelly is an Unlikely Candidate, but What If?

Han Van Meegerin
Urban Meyer's announcement that he will step down as the University of Florida Head Coach position begs the following questions: Who will and will not be the next head football coach of the Florida Gators? Already rumors are circulating in the air with names such as Bob Stoops, Bobby Petrino and others being mentioned. However, here is a look at who is probably not a candidate for this position and propose a series of what if questions.

The Head Football Coach of the University Florida is a prestigious position. Accordingly, football coaches of many shapes, sizes and personalities would relish the opportunity to take on that position. Brian Kelly is one coach that is probably not on Florida's short list of candidates. He recently traded visions of Sugar Bowls dancing in his Cincinnati Bearcat head for the lure of the Luck of the Irish.

Imagine if you can the following what if scenario:

1. What if a couple of weeks earlier Urban Meyer made the announcement that he was stepping down as the Head Coach of University Florida football team?

2. What if the circumstances were such that Urban Meyer stepped down as the Gator football Coach immediately?

3. What if Brian Kelly the Ex-Cincinnati Bearcat Head Football Coach was rumored to be in the running to become Urban Meyer's replacement as Head Football Coach at Florida?

4. What if The University of Florida School President Bernie Machen or Athletic Director Jeremy Foley offered Brian Kelly the opportunity to become the next Head Coach of the University of Florida football team.

In the interest of not putting the University of Florida football team at a disadvantage in its recruiting and overall efforts to achieve its objectives next year, would Brian Kelly have become a Bearcat Turncoat? Would he not only turn his back on his University, staff and players but also coach against them in the Allstate Sugar Bowl?

In the end, only Brian Kelly knows the answer to this question. Given the circumstances about how he abandoned The Big East Conference, The University of Cincinnati and most importantly his Bearcat football staff and players, it does make one wonder what he would have done if given the what if scenario proposed here within.

Whatever Urban decides to do, I hope he remembers that his family-his real family-should be his first priority. Good report, cheers.

It will be interesting to see who's chosen. But don't let Nancy. I don't think those boys could take the pressure.

Hopefully he will be back. I think it's his health and wish him well.

This just in...I watched his news conference & he said now that he's going to take a leave of abscence. This is good news for Gator fans because this means he's likely to return. This man is already a Hall of Fame coach, no doubt about it. Nice write Han. I love sports & love your columns friend. : - )
