Tips, Tricks, When to Splurge and When to Squint Those Eyes and Keep Looking

Throughout the course of history, beauty has taken many turns and flares, but one thing remains true, long live lush lashes! The ancient Egyptians used ivory and bone as lash applicators and blended with water, honey, kohl and crocodile dung. The 1830s brought about the beauty obsessed Victorian era, where beauty divas of the day found themselves mixing elderberry with ashes over a hot fire. Fortunately, we've come a long way. In the 1917 Eugene Rimmel is credited with the creation of the first packaged cosmetic mascara.

What is it about us women and our lashes? It adds the twinkle we can't live without! We all want long, plump, voluminous, doll-like lashes. Don't you just love it when someone says, "your lashes are so long". Then, the follow-up question is, "what kind of mascara do you use?"

Let's face it, lashes are sexy. But, inquiring minds and mascara lovers are batting there eyes and asking questions. Does it really matter, is the secret to a good mascara hidden within the formula, the brush or in the technique?

My answer is D, all of the above. You do need a good mascara. As an open minded makeup artist, I give a fair shot to the latest mascaras and there claims to fame. It seems however, that I stay loyal to Great Lash- sometimes you get more than you pay for. Maybelline's Great Lash mascara is probably one of the most, if not the most iconic product in the cosmetics realm. Definicils by Lancome is another great love and Diorshow by Christian Dior is also one enchanting mascara, to say the least.

There are some other tips of the mascara trade. First off, rule one, replace your mascara every 3 months. This will avoid bacteria that could cause eye infections, clumps or flakes. Also, no sharing, pink eye can be a very uncomfortable experience. Now, despite what your grandma said, no pumping the wand into the mascara. It dries it up and causes bacteria- therefore a no no. As for opening your month while you apply, carry on if it's your thing!

A tip that I've become accustomed to, is to use two mascara...one for lengthening and then another for plumping. Feel free to apply several coats, just make sure they are not clumpy. As for color, don't be scared to step outside the box and try a wand with a little splash of color- you might fall in love with what you find. Navy will whiten the inner parts of the eye...and brown can beautifully compliment blue or green eyes. For the Holiday season, if you're feeling bold, go gold!

There are endless mascaras to choose from- be creative and have fun with it- wink, wink!
