The Folly of Envy: A Cat Story

Shirley A Mandel
I have become quite the cat lady lately. I been feeding several feril cats on my back porch, and recently I aquired a little kitten that was no bigger than my hand when I got it. For the first week or so, I had to spoon feed the little critter his milk, but now he is drinking his milk on his own and eating dry cat food. He still only weighs about a pound, but he scampers all over the house. I call him Baby Cat.

This morning is when my problems with the cat began. He jumped up on my bed and pawed at my face in order to get me up so I could feed him. After feeding the kitten, I poured a bowl of cereial for myself and began to eat. Baby Cat was watching me intently in a seemingly aggressive stance with his eyes turning a dusty, dark color like he wanted to pounce. After I had my scanty breakfast, I appoached him in order to pet him. Suddently, he hissed and lurched for my hand.

Immediately, I smacked him hard on his hind parts, and said, "Okay, cat, if you want to hunt, then you are going outside." I put his food, his milk, and his water on the back porch. Then I threw his favorite pillow and toys outside, and the cat was soon to follow. He did not like it out there; he cried all day to get back in.

Then enters Daddy Cat, his apparent father. I took my eyes off the porch for a minute, and when I went to check on him again he was missing. I went outside to look for him., and he was no where to be found. It was then I heard this low, gutteral, ominous meow from the tall grass in the back of the yard. It was Daddy Cat, and he was angry that this little kitten was in his territory and was eating "his" food. It was obvious that Daddy Cat was jealous. I called for the kitten again and he suddenly appeared. He must have been hiding under his pillow.

In my higher human mind (at least I hope I am smarter than a cat), I thought that jealousy in this case is so useless because I have plenty of food to go around for all the cats, and plenty of affection too. God also has plenty of blessings to go around for all His children. It is not necessary to be jealous because someone gets a material, ministry, or spiritual blessing from God. There is more of God's grace where that came from, and if you wait on Him, your blessing will come too. He does not love one person any iota more than He loves another person.

I let Baby Cat back in the house but confined him to the computer room (his favorite room anyway). I'm not going to be able to let him outside unsupervised for awhile. Just what am I going to do with these bad cats?

Well, this is as deep as my theology goes tonight, folks. Hope you enjoyed.

Suzanne is right. Tom cats will kill kittens especially if the mother cat is around. They do this to stop the mother from feeding the kittens so she will go back into season. Good article.

Interesting article. Intact Toms will kill kittens. It's a good thing you brought the kitten back in. His behavior may indicate that there is something wrong with him. It would be a good idea to get him to a vet and get his shots ASAP and see if there is something amiss that is causing his unusual behavior.

It's wonderful to be responsible for animals and have them look up to you. They will soon learn there's enough to go around! :)
