The Food Network; A Television Channel Review

Bill Hanks
For years after I got cable television, I never paid much attention to the Food Network. I always thought to myself, "Now that is a nice station for the ladies." I guess I was too interested in flipping my remote. However, one night I dropped in and watched Iron Chef. For those of you that have never seen the program, they have two chefs battle it out in a kitchen stadium. The two chefs prepare a five course meal focusing on one item, They are then judged by three individuals that specialize in the food industry.

The Food Network got it's start on November 23, 1993. Until December of 2007, the signature show was Emeril Live. In 2005, they started going to reality shows involving food. The Next Food Network Star gave many new chefs a chance to compete for their own show on the network. This was a unique idea that became very popular. Many of today's stars have come from that program.

Some of these stars have even went out and brought in other popular chefs off the streets of cities for shows. One of those is Throw Down with Bobby Flay.

In the Fall of 2001, Rachel Ray got her start with 30 Minute Meals. She quickly branched out to $40 A Day. She now has her own television show each day as well as her own magazine Everyday with Rachel Ray.

There have been other chefs that are very popular. Many of them depend on what you are looking for. Paula Deen has several shows that accent her Southern style of cooking. Paula has written many books that can be found at any major book store. Giada at Home features the granddaughter of movie director Dino De Laurentiis. Alton Brown is the host of Iron Chef America. It is a spin off of Iron Chef. Alton is featured in many of the programs on the network.

One of the latest stars to come from the Next Food Network Star is Guy Fieri. Guy hits the road to check out different restaurants and food all over America. The laid back California guy hosts three shows. He also does adds for Fridays Restaurants as well. Guy admits that he is living his dream life. He could of very easily have lost on the Next Food Network Star and dropped back into obscurity. Today is one of the favorites that is featured.

Besides teaching us different cuisines each night of the week, the food network gives us a taste of reality television, different places all over America, and lots of fun.

I liked the "Two Fat Ladies", but I don't think they are on any more. They cooked a lot with herbs.
