Brewed in Dover, Enjoyed in Annapolis

Fordham Brewing Company has a long history in America. It was first introduced in 1703 by a young Benjamin Fordham who set up shop in the new port city of Annapolis, Maryland.

In 1995, the Fordham tradition was reborn at the Ram's Head Tavern on West Street. However, in 2003, Fordham moved to a larger brewing facility in Dover, Delaware. Although it's not technically brewed in "Naptown" anymore, Rams Head still remains the premier spot to get a fresh Fordham draft. And that's exactly what I did.

As I enter the old Annapolis tavern, I quickly snag a vacant spot at the bar. After looking over the beer menu, I decide to start off with the Copperhead Ale. As the bartender slides the beer towards me, the first thing I notice is the beautiful copper color. Upon the first sip, I find that the flavor is nicely balanced with a smooth, clean finish. You could pair this one with anything from a blackened steak to a Maryland crab cake. (Since we're actually in Maryland, I would suggest the latter)

Always having the tendency to drive my bartender crazy, I can never stay with just one type of beer. Variety is the spice of life, right? So, my next request is the traditional Tavern Ale. I like this one because of its subtle hoppy bitterness coupled with a citrus aroma. Overall, it has a fresh taste that most beer drinkers will enjoy.

Pushing the limits of my bartender's patience, I finally ask for a Helles Lager. I take a drink as the foamy white head attaches itself to my upper lip. This beer reminds me more of a mild Pilsner but it's still quite satisfying.

Although I only tried three of the Fordham brews, there are quite a few others. These include the Scotch Ale, the Doppelbock, Queen Anne Kolsch and various seasonal brews. No matter what your preference, I'm sure you'll find one that will put a smile on your face. And even though you might be able to purchase bottled Fordham at your local beer store, I highly recommend tipping one back in the town where it was born. Annapolis, MD.
