The Four Prejudice Fools

F.D. Beckham
I and my family recently moved into a subdivision of newer houses, which are about four years old. There were not any black people living in the subdivision. Then back in April a black family moved into the community. The family is made up of a black woman and her two adult children. They do not act anything like the black people see on the Portland news. They are very reserve and quiet. They are not imposing. They do not play loud rap music, and they do not have loud, wild friends and family visiting them. I believe they are Christians.

The black family appear to be low income. They do not own a car. They ride the bus and use the cab. The house they are living in is a rental house, owned by some Taiwanese people. When the people moved into the house they did not have much, only basic things. They are just average people.

I do not mind the black family living in the community. However, there are some white residents who do not want them near any black people in the community. Fortunately they are only four men, four busy body white men. These four white men are prejudice against black people. They do not want any black people living in the community. They also do not like the landlord of the house the black family is renting because the landlord is Asian.

So after the black family moved into their house the four busy body white men got together to try to brainstorm up on some way to harass the black family out of the community without the appearance of racism. They could not complain about loud noise and disruptive behavior because the family is reserve and quiet. So they decided to make an issue of their yard. The grass and dandelions had grown up in their front, on the side of their house, and in the backyard. A man had come to mow their lawn once. Then the grass grew up again and went several weeks without mowing. It had grown quite tall.

The four busy body white men went around to the different people in the neighborhood trying to organize them to make a big issue of the black people's yard. However, everyone wanted to stay out of it. So the four men had to act on their own. The men started taking pictures of the black people's yard.

However, nothing became of their plot. The black family bought a weed eater and used it to chop down the tall weeds and grass. Then one day their landlord brought them a brand new lawn mower. They have been keeping their lawn mowed and trimmed ever since. Now the four busy body white are mad because they cannot think of anything to use to make an issue of the black family. For now they are in an evil doer brainstorm slump. I'm glad.

It is really ridiculous for those four busy body white men to try to make trouble for the black family. What makes them better and superior to that family? Those men are not perfect. They have a lot of issues of their own that they need to deal with. For instance, on of the four white men shows signs of being a pedophile. At times I observe him from my living room window when he is out in his front yard. A white woman who is a single parent with two preteen daughters live in the house directly across the street from him, his wife, and his son. Whenever one or both of the girls are out in their front yard or skating up and down the side walk, the man would come outside. He would stand holding his water hose to water his lawn, and stare at the girls. There are a lot of other children in the community who run allover the neighborhood playing, however, those two girls are the only children he stares at. He has the creepiest, nastiest expression on his face as he stares at the girls.

A second man in the group is one I nicknamed Sticky Fingers. It is very apparent that Sticky Fingers has some kind of edgy, hyper, nervy condition. He also seems to have a problem focusing.

The reason why I call him Sticky Fingers is because he is the type of person who has to have whatever he sees and wants. Although his front yard is a perfect picture for Better Homes and Gardens, his back yard looks like a junk yard. He has stacks and piles of stuff and potted dead plants in his back yard. He brings home stuff in a wooden wagon that he keeps hitched to his truck. His garage is packed with boxes, tools, old tires, bikes, computers, and an old car that does not work. Even his house is so crowded there is hardly any walking room. Fortunately there are only three people in his family, himself, his wife, and his daughter.

One day when looking out my living room window, I saw Sticky Fingers walking through the neighborhood, pushing his wheel barrel. He was looking all around the way people do when they are shopping at WalMart. I watched him push his wheel barrel down to the empty lot where some workmen had left a pile dirt. He shoveled some dirt into his wheel barrel and then returned to his house.

"What a card," I thought.

The third white man in the group is the oldest of the four. I believe he is in his mid or upper 60s. He works for homeland security in Portland. He has a houseful of Asians. I counted four Asian women, a half-white- half-Asian boy, and half-black-half-Asian girl. I never see any people that look like friends or relatives visiting the white man and all of his Asians. He does not allow people from the neighborhood inside his house and in his backyard. The two children only come outside to go to school. Only one of the Asian women appear to go out to work on a daily basis. All the other women stay home. The only people who come to the house regularly are white men. They come in their cars and leave with an Asian woman and the return about an hour or two later.

The fourth white man in the group lives next door to the black family. He does not go out to work, but his wife does. Everyday all day hi sits in his garage. He has a big sofa and a big television set with cable in his garage. There he sits all day everyday from morning to pass midnight watching television, smoking, and drinking pitcherfuls of beer. He is always drunk and coughing. He says he cannot work because he has some kind of mental disability.

I cannot understand how those four white men can gather up the nerve to try to organize the neighborhood against the black family. Those men have their bad secrets and imperfections. How in the world can they think they are better than the black family? The oddest thing about those white men is that they all are going to vote for Barack Obama for president! Weird!

I am glad the other people in the neighborhood did not go along with them. I and my household have nothing to do with those men and their households.

Prejudice is wrong. If you are ever approached to be apart of practicing a prejudice act against someone, don't do it. Just think, the one's who think they are so superior can have so many problems.
