The Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo, Michigan: A Mini Las Vegas in the Midwest

In these trying economic times, who has the money to travel? Not me! So when my fellow Chicago-based friends started to plan a costly Vegas vacation, I swayed them in a different, more sensible direction. Just over an hour car ride from the city, I discovered a "mini Vegas" at the Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo, Michigan.

The Four Winds Casino features a sprawling Las Vegas-like gaming room complete with 3,000 slot machines ranging from one cent all the way up to $100. They also have a one of a kind poker room with prestigious tournaments, dozens of table games and a high limit section. This expansive casino encompasses 130,000 square feet surrounded by various shops and eateries as well as a large elegant hotel with an eclectic woodsy, yet modern feel. In fact, when approaching this resort, you are completely buffered by weaving woodlands and lush greenery which perfectly reflects the scenic Harbor Country location minutes from Lake Michigan.

The Four Winds Casino is home to many dining options from upscale elegance to tasty fast food. The Silver Creek Bistro and Copper Rock Steakhouse offer gourmet menus while quick meals can be enjoyed at Timbers and light subs, wraps and salads can be purchased at Grab N Go. The Four Winds also presents several lounges like the Martini Bar, The Spoils Bar and the Stage Bar featuring lively musical entertainment.

For you shopoholics, the Four Winds Casino boasts a spectrum of upscale boutiques advertising everything from designer bags and jewelry to golf wear and other casual comforts.

And, hey, if you have to bring the kids along, no worries! The Four Winds Casino offers supervised hourly childcare at Kids Quest. The center is open seven days a week and will watch children from six weeks of age to 29 months. Your kids will have a great time in the playground, in the arcade, on the dance floor and singing karaoke at Kids Quest! If you're not comfortable leaving your little one, stick around and enjoy playtime and a break from the slots.

The Four Winds Casino offers luxurious accommodations featuring oversized rooms and celebrity suites complete with extravagant amenities. Basic room packages for weekdays begin at around $299. My friends and I found this to be a tad pricey, so we opted to stay minutes away at a Holiday Inn Express. Neatly appointed rooms and a free hot breakfast all for under $200 on the weekend suited us just fine.

Still, a short trip to the Four Winds Casino definitely beats a long expensive flight to Vegas and if you join their members club, soon you will receive discounted room specials in your mailbox! Be aware that smoking is still allowed indoors in Michigan, so this casino truly does feels like Las Vegas, smoke and all!

I recently finished writing my second romance novel, however, I am still waiting patiently to be published. I am a firm believer in the old addage, "write what you know." I always try to follow that credo...  View profile
