The Free Medical Clinic of America in Knoxville, Tennessee: Review
Medical Clinic in East Tennessee for the Working Poor and Unemployed
For five years now Dr. Tom Kim has operated the Free Medical Clinic of America which is located off Chapman Highway in South Knoxville. This clinic is for what Dr. Kim has considered the "working poor". For people who are working but cannot afford or do not have health insurance through work, this clinic's payments are based on income.
Dr. Kim has now expanded his services to help those who are unemployed. Those people who are unemployed and do not have health insurance can call the clinic and set up an appointment. However, Dr. Kim stated to WBIR Television that he will only write prescriptions for those with diabetes, high blood pressure, and/or other chronic health problems.
People have stated that "Dr. Kim really cares about his patients.", and others have said "I would recommend him to anyone." This is all while Dr. Kim says that "It [is] part of his duty as an American."
If you visit their website at www.freemedicalclinic.net the first words you see are from the Bible in Matthew 25:40. You will also see a brief biography of Dr. Kim and just why he is giving back to his country.
The clinic does not treat emergencies or walk in patients. All patients must make an appointment. To make an appointment, call 865-577-3733. Office hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasionally each month there will be hours offered from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
This clinic does not dispense medication on the premises. Also, there is usually no pediatrician on call so children under 16 are most often not seen. They do not prescribe any type of narcotic medications at all. And they do not offer mental health or dental services. They do not do any type of work or school related physicals either.
A form of photo identification (preferably a Driver's License) and proof of employment must be taken to each visit. If you are self-employed or your spouse is the one working, then there still must be proof of income provided. One thing they request and require is that you take a list of all of your current medications to the appointment.
Eligibility requirements are: you must be an American citizen or have a "green card", must have an employment verification*, and must not have health insurance. *If you are currently unemployed check with the office to see what information you need to get an appointment.
The clinic is located at 6209 Chapman Highway Knoxville Tennessee. Their website has a place to contact them via the internet and also offers driving directions to the clinic.
