The French Open Tennis Matches at Roland Garros - Day 10

Robin Soderling Outlasted Roger Federer in the Quarterfinals

For the first time since the 2004 French Open, we will not see Roger Federer in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament. Robin Soderling (5) from Sweden, who had lost all 12 of his matches against Federer before Tuesday, beat the world No. 1 in four sets to end one of the greatest streaks in sports - 23 consecutive Slam semifinals. Scores for the quarterfinal match were 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Soderling accomplished what 110 previous opponents had not been able to do. His unrelenting pressure on Federer's backhand was one feature of Soderling's game that made the difference. Soderling is the only player other than Nadal to beat Federer at Roland Garros since 2004. Because of Federer's defeat, Nadal will reclaim the No. 1 ranking next week if he wins the title. The upset raises the possibility of a Nadal-Soderling rematch in the final.

Tomas Berdych (15) from the Czech Republic defeated Russian Mikhail Youzhny (11) in three sets, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 to make Berdych one of the four men left to play in the semifinals.

On the women's side, Francesca Schiavone (17) from Italy defeated the number three seed Caroline Wozniacki, a Danish tennis player of Polish origin, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.

Elena Dementieva (5) from Russia won her quarterfubak match over fellow Russian Nadia Petrova (19) in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.

The draw for Day 11 sets up quarterfinal matches between Rafael Nadal and Nicolas Almagro, Novak Djokovic and Jurgen Melzer, Serena Williams and Samantha Stosur, and Jelena Jankovich and Yaroslava Shvedova.

Serena and Venus Williams, seeded number one in doubles, will play their semi-final match on Day 11 against Liezel Huber/Anabel Medina Garrigues.
