I enjoyed the cast of characters, mostly because a few were so surprising. You have tough guy Win Garano, his eccentric Nana who practices witchcraft, politically ambitious yet vulnerable DA Monique Lamont. You also meet Stump, a cop who lost a leg in a suspicious motorcycle accident. Then you also meet Raggedy Ann, a suspicious character, seemingly from the streets, who keeps showing up in odd places. Each of the characters has that sense of mystery about them, leaving me curious about their lives.
Without giving anything away, The Front is an exciting crime novel. My curiosity was nearly choking me by the end, and even at the end, my questions weren't all answered! Win Garano is assigned a cold case from his boss, the DA Lamont. Although the case is an old murder, and she wants him to link it to a specific criminal, he is doubtful of her intentions, and of the actual details of the case. She also directs him to work with a specific member of the local law enforcement, who seems unwilling to cooperate with the case no matter what. Interestingly enough, there seems to be some issues at play between the different departments that causes her hostility.
I read several books a month, and each leaves me with one of two impressions at the end. Either I am satisfied by the ending, or I'm left wanting more. Sometimes being left wanting is a good thing! If the story will be continued by a later novel, I have something to look forward to! Of course, I get disappointed having to wait for the next chapter in the whole story, and if the wait is too long, I'll downright forget about the book with all the others I have read! I'm looking forward to seeing how the next book works out, but I also hope that I get slightly more finality to the ending of it! Overall, The Front held my attention and kept me waiting to see what happened all the way up to the last page. (Of course, now I have to wait for the next novel!)
Hopefully I've whetted your appetite for Patricia Cornwell. Please let me know what you think of her book once you read it!

Good review. I am a Cornwell fan but haven't read this one yet.
I'll have to pick this up. I love Cornwell!
This sounds like a good read! I am always on the lookout for a good book!
I like this author, too, and agree with you that being left "wanting more" at the end of a novel can be a very good thing indeed.
