The Funky Fur Fad

Whether it's hip hop idols or women in ridiculous mink coats on their backs, it seems that sporting the skins and furs of animals is a sign of status and power. The more dead animals you possess, the more money you must have. Vanity and murder go hand in hand in a twisted game of capitalism, greed, and an overwhelming sense of self-importance.

It's easy to blame the fur fad on lack of insight or ignorance. However, as we progress more into the information age, ignorance is nothing more than conscientious stupidity. Ignorance is bliss, and most people have no clue about the plight of animals on fur farms simply because they choose not to.

Animals on fur farms spend their short lives in tiny cramped cages, and are ultimately strangled, electrocuted or gassed, often times still alive when their skin is ripped off of their bodies. These skins end up in the hands of furriers who make garments for the rich, famous and show-off. Minks, chinchillas, foxes and other animals are held in such high regard that wearing their fur is deemed elegant, and in such low regard that we feel entitled to execute them for their skin. The hypocrisy is baffling.

Many people argue that using animals for skin is more eco-friendly than processing synthetics. But when it comes to fur, there's no reason why people should feel obligated to choose the lesser of two evils. Fur is unnecessary, and in the 21st century, there are plenty of ways to stay warm and cozy during the harsh months of winter. Feel free to love the earth and animals at no expense. You'll lose nothing.

You don't have to be religious, a spiritual zealot or a modern day hippie to choose not to support the cruel fur industry. Fashion and death shouldn't overlap.
