The Funniest Labor Day Weekend Fishing Story Ever Told

The Wildest Thing is Its All True

Chris Jackson
The labor day holiday weekend started off as planned. We gathered together our usual things such as potato salad and fishing poles. Our family has always gotten together on this holiday to celebrate our hard work. The day usually consists of meeting at a favorite fishing spot and grilling out while the lines sit in the water. This holiday was ending up much the same as countless others until it happened. I was at the truck tending to uncle Charlie's demands of bug spray and night crawlers. I had left my rod unattended about fifty feet away from everyone. When i returned with the items for uncle Charlie i walked over to my chair and sat down. I had just opened my pop when it happened.

My pole bent down towards the water and when I set the hook I could feel the monster at the end of my line. I fought the beast while the family gathered around and all were amazed when I got the monster flathead catfish to the bank. It had to weigh fifty pounds. I was having the time of my life when all of a sudden my worst nightmare came in the form of my reel breaking. Stunned I still had the fish on my line after it had broke I threw down my pole and tied the remaining slack of my line around my foot and buried it into the soft mud of the lake. I yelled for my uncle and my father to grab the net from uncle Charlie's truck. To my amazement the catfish started pulling so hard that it was actually pulling me deeper into the lake. I started to panic and when my family finally got back to me i was over waist deep in the water. My uncle Charlie gave the net to my cousin Dwayne. Dwayne then jumped into the lake and came over to me and went under the water. Thirty seconds later he came from the bottom and said that he has the fish in the net. We made it to the shore and hauled the monster to the bank. Dwayne had told the story of how he followed the line from my foot and seen the monster buried in the mud. He speaks of this every time we have a family function. There soaked and tired we all got in a group picture and now that picture is hanging in all of our homes. Uncle Charlie has since passed and he loved telling the story to strangers at his local burger house and to the grand children and nieces and nephews who were not there.
Sometimes when we set out to relax from our hard work even more taxing adventures find us.

  • there is no such thing as relaxation
  • always bring as many family members to a holiday celebration as you can
  • never tie a loose fishing line around your foot when a catfish is on the other end
